The Burnett Lab

Dr. Karen Burnett

Dr. Karen Burnett is Research Associate Professor of Biology at the College of Charleston, and Adjunct Faculty in the Graduate Program of Marine Biology at the College.   She and Dr. Lou Burnett are Co-Principle Investigators on NSF and NOAA-funded research grants.  They also serve as Co-Directors of the Fort Johnson Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program.

Dr. Lou Burnett

Dr. Lou Burnett is Professor of Biology at the College of Charleston, Director of the Grice Marine Laboratory and Co-Principle Investigator with Dr. Karen Burnett on the major research and education projects in the Burnett Laboratory.  Dr. Burnett  also serves as the CofC representative on Science Board at the Hollings Marine Laboratory.

Dr. Brett Macey

Dr. Macey joined the lab as a postdoctoral fellow in March 2005 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Capetown, South Africa.  Although he is involved in many lab projects, Dr. Macey has focused extensively on the ability of the oyster Crassostrea virginica to eliminate bacteria from its tissues.   Combining standard culture techniques with modern qPCR techniques, he has characterized the impacts of hypoxia, seasonal variation and metals contamination on the oyster immune system.

Heidi Williams

Heidi is a joined the laboratory in Spring 2005 and expects to graduate in Spring 2008 with a  Masters Degree in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston.  Her thesis research explores the role of individual oyster tissues in the inactivation and degradation of bacterial pathogens.

Lindy Thibodeaux

Lindy is a first year Masters Degree candidate in the Graduate Program in Marine Biology , CofC.  She joined the laboratory in January 2005, and has yet to define a topic for her thesis. She is getting her feet wet in the lab by setting up a new instrument, the Oxygraph to monitor oxygen uptake in oyster hemocytes.
