South Carolina
Chemist of the Year
April 19, 2000
Dr. Charles F. Beam, Jr., Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the College of Charleston was named the Chemist of the Year by the South Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society - the first time that this award has ever been given to a faculty member at an undergraduate institution. He is a faculty member who lives, breathes, and truly celebrates undergraduate research. Dr. Beam is most deserving of this award and honor. He is a Council of Undergraduate Research member who has demonstrated sustained excellence in research with undergraduates for over a quarter of a century. He has achieved significant research results while excelling at helping undergraduates develop their research talents and skills. He has over 70 publications with undergraduate co-authors in peer-reviewed journals, has received over $350,000 in extramural support for research, seen many students make numerous presentations by undergraduates at regional or national meetings, sent many students on to postgraduate programs, included minorities and females in his research group, and incorporated research activities and experiences into the courses that he teaches. He is in the third year of $130,000 NSF-RUI funded summer program. He is amazing in all that he accomplishes. He clearly sets the standard for professional growth and development within our department.
