April 21, 2000

Professor Charles F. Beam, Jr. of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry received the 1999- 2000 Outstanding Achievement Award of the School of Sciences and Mathematics for his extraordinary accomplishments in the area of scholarship and research. Charles has always been prolific in terms of his output for a scientist located at an undergraduate institution. In recent years he has managed to even increase his output. During the 1999-2000 academic year he was been truly amazing.

During the past year Dr. Beam has supervised the work of nine undergraduate students (Kelly Rose, Jessica Townsend, Deborah Schady, Wayne Kelly, Jennifer Downs, Heather Greer, Jennifer Bear, Nathan Templeton, and Stefan Pastine), During the past twelve months Dr. Beam has or will have published nine papers and has seven more ready to be soon submitted. On those nine papers show the names of 19 undergraduate co-authors. Dr. Beam is the lead co-PI with Prof. Shannon Martinez on a prestigious National Science Foundation Research in Undergraduate Institutions grant for $102,000 that will fund work with undergraduates that has one year left. He also has current a ACS-PRF grant for $30,000.

During the past year he also managed to review two manuscripts for the Journal of Organic Chemistry, one for Organic Letters, and one for the Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry, and serve as a referee for three research proposals (two for NSF and one for ORAU) He maintains his dynamic presence in the classroom and has rendered satisfactory service to the department.
