CofC Life Science Programs Receive Awards of Excellence

The life science programs at the College of Charleston have received the highest mark possible from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The CHE has awarded Commendations of Excellence to the school’s undergraduate programs in biology, biochemistry and marine biology. In Columbia recently, the CHE presented the award plagues to faculty from C of C’s School of Sciences and Mathematics.

The distinction comes after the programs received a thorough review by an out-of-state peer group of professors and scientists. The consultants reviewed 42 college and university life science programs statewide. Only six, among them the three C of C programs, were recommended for Commendations of Excellence.

The life science recognition comes a year after the school’s physical science programs (chemistry, geology, and physics) also received CHE Commendations of Excellence.

"We are extremely pleased," said Dr. Gordon Jones. "Students and high school teachers in South Carolina should know that we have these excellent programs here at the College of Charleston. Students should take a look at us if they are interested in the life and physical sciences."
