PROFESSOR ELIZABETH MARTIN TO RETIRE

EMMBetsy Martin, Associate Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry, will retire at the end of the spring semester 2007. She joined the Chemistry Department in 1975 and has taught and influenced the lives of countless students. She will use retirement to enjoy all the more her two grandchildren. Her husband, Hank, will also be retiring from MUSC.

Prof. Martin received her A.B. from Winthrop and has an M.A.T. from Duke and an M.S. from Georgia State University. She taught in public schools before coming to the College.

Betsy has numerous awards, college-wide, state-wide, and nationally, to her credit:

1988 Distinguished Teaching Award, College of Charleston
1988 Distinguished Service Award, College of Charleston
1994 Distinguished Achievement Award, School of Sciences and Mathematics, College of Charleston
1995 Charles Townes Award for Support of Science and Mathematics Education
1995 Helms Citation of Excellence of the South Carolina Science Council
1996 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science Awareness, South Carolina Academy of Science
1999 Distinguished Advising Award, College of Charleston
1999 Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching given by the Chemical Manufacturer’s Association
2007 Appointed Associate Professor Emeritus

From 1991-1993 she served as a mentor for the United States Chemistry Olympiad Team. The 1993 team that competed in Perugia, Italy, for which she served as the head mentor, achieved it best record ever up to that time.

In addition to the impact she has had on students at the College of Charleston, Prof. Martin has indirectly influenced the careers of many untold numbers of students through the way that she has helped advance chemical education through her participation with the South Carolina Science Council, the South Carolina Association of Chemist Teachers, and the numerous workshops that she has hosted at the College of Charleston. The statewide and national awards are an acknowledgment of those efforts.
