CHARLES BEAM RECEIVES GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE


Dr. Charles Beam, a Chemistry professor at the College of Charleston received the “2003 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science Awareness” at the March 21st meeting of the South Carolina Academy of Science in Clemson. In announcing the award, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford commended Dr. Beam for his “commitment and leadership to excellence, demonstrating a superlative level of accomplishment in guiding research at the undergraduate level, and being the finest exemplar of a research mentor at the undergraduate level in the state.” Dr. Beam came to the College of Charleston in 1982. In 2000, he was named the Chemist of the Year by the South Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society - the first time that this award has ever been given to a faculty member at an undergraduate institution. That same year he also won the Outstanding Achievement Award of the School of Sciences and Mathematics for his extraordinary accomplishments in the area of scholarship and research.
