The 2002 School of Sciences and Mathematics Distinguished Achievement Award was presented jointly to Michael P. Katuna and James P. Deavor.
Dr. Deavor joined the College of Charleston in 1983, was the 2001 recipient of the College of Charelston Distinguished Teaching Award and the 2002 Distinguished Advising Award. He served from 1995-2001 as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and during the 2001-2002 academic year served as interim dean.
 | Dr. Katuna has been a distinguished contributor to the College since he was hired in 1974. In that first year at the College, Dr. Katuna was asked to assume the chair’s position, which he held for the following 25 years (until 1999). While developing a highly successful undergraduate geology program that received a commendation for excellence by CHE, and handling the administrative needs of the department, he also amazingly managed to conduct an active research program. He is recognized as one the leading professionals working in Atlantic coastal-plain stratigraphy and modern coastal processes. He has collaborated with numerous other geologists, and is highly regarded by distinguished geologists from the region, and nationally. His work has resulted in numerous professional presentations and invited talks, published abstracts, technical reports, invited papers, and other refereed professional articles.
College of Charleston administrators, local teachers, scientists, town managers, mayors, and other professionals regularly call upon Dr. Katuna for his geological expertise. |
