Guidelines for Preparing to Change Requirements for a Minor

Minors do not stand or fall on their own merits; they will be judged according to how they contribute to a student’s course of study.  A minor must have a coherent place within a student's program.  It may require changing due to reasons such as updating content or a change in available courses.

If this is an Interdisciplinary Minor, be sure you are in compliance with the guidelines for Interdisciplinary Minors & Majors.

Typical changes handled by this form:

  1. Addition of a course to the minor;
  2. Deletion of a course from the minor;
  3. Change in catalog description of the minor;
  4. Change in prerequisites for the minor;
  5. Change in the distribution of the requirements;

Changes not handled by this form:

            New courses or deletions of courses.  These are done using the respective forms.

Questions to consider about changes in the minor:

  1. What are the goals, objectives and intended outcomes of the changes (the basis should already be well defined by the department(s) sponsoring the minor)?
  2.  If there is change in distribution of the requirements, how do the beginning, middle and end of the curriculum develop the goal objectives and intended outcomes of the program?
  3.  How does this course enhance the liberal education of the students?
  4.  How will the changes affect students already enrolled in the existing major sequence (i.e. how will you administer the changes?)?
  5.  Will the changes affect staffing resources and needs?

Note: If courses are no longer part of a major as a result of changing the major, they will not automatically be deleted. A delete course form must also be submitted to the Curriculum Committee.
