The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) is responsible for providing comprehensive sanitation and recycling services to the University, promoting source reduction of solid waste among its work units, and keeping track of the amounts and types of University waste disposed and recycled.

Head of Marine Sciences - Galapagos Islands

*THE DEPARTMENT OF MARINE SCIENCES AT THE CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION SEEKS A SPECIALIST IN MARINE RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION*

Position: Head of Marine Sciences (reference JIM-07)

The Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands (CDF) seeks a Head of Marine Sciences, to work at the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), based on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos.  CDF is an international non-government organization, whose mission is "To provide the knowledge and support to ensure the conservation of the biodiversity in the Galapagos Archipelago through scientific research and complementary actions".

All the work of CDF is carried out in close collaboration with the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS), which is the authority responsible for managing both the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) and the Galapagos National Park.  CDF also collaborates with other authorities, fishermen, and tour operators in the GMR, through a participatory management system.

Responsibilities:

The Head of Marine Sciences will be a key member of the CDF Science Program and will be responsible for the implementation of marine science activities within the framework of the CDF Strategic Plan. This position reports to the Director of Science, and supervises and provides leadership to the Marine Sciences group. The Head of Marine Sciences may be required from time to time to act as the main voice for marine issues at CDF.

Role:

The Head of Marine Sciences will direct all marine research activities at CDRS. This person must contribute to strengthening current research on ecosystems, climate change, population dynamics, fisheries and marine tourism. This position will develop and lead a research program that must focus on conservation priorities, including baseline research, monitoring, studies of priority conservation problems, experimental management, development of scientific alliances, participatory management of the Marine Reserve, and dissemination of scientific material. The position includes the following specific responsibilities:

·        *Maintain a fluid relationship with the main partners of CDF in order to ensure effective communication and an understanding of the needs of clients, donors and allies, including providing support and an active role in the participatory management system for the Marine Reserve.
·        *Lead the marine research team in association with Galapagos and external partners in developing a participatory monitoring system for the management of the Galapagos marine ecosystem, including biological inventories, key ecological (ecosystem, community, population), biophysical (El Niño and climate change) and social indicators, and supporting the development of a socio-economic baseline.
·        *Lead the marine research team in association with Galapagos and external partners in developing tools and strategies to identify and prioritize problems and in using these tools to prioritize research and conservation in Galapagos.
·        *Lead the marine research team in their work with the GNPS and other partners to carry out priority studies of the key problems which the Galapagos ecosystem is facing, solve management problems and develop strategies appropriate for the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of Galapagos.
·        *Strengthen existing scientific alliances, and develop new alliances with national and foreign scientists and conservationists to work as collaborators in marine monitoring and priority studies.
·        *Ensure the publication and dissemination of the results of marine research in the scientific community through peer reviewed publications and participation in conferences and symposia, and ensure that scientific information is available on the CDF website.
·        *Carry out any other activity required on occasion by the Director of Science or the CDF Executive Team.

Qualifications:

This position requires extensive knowledge of research applied to marine conservation and resource management.  Qualifications required include:
·        *PhD or equivalent experience in marine research and conservation; with strong scientific background and publication record.
·        *Demonstrated capacity to design, supervise and execute scientific research projects.
·        *At least five years experience of science administration and project management, including basic financial management.
·        *Good skills in communication and personnel management, including supervision and training of staff and students, and team-building.
·        *Ability to communicate orally and write technical reports in both Spanish and English.
·        *Knowledge of databases and GIS, including Access and ArcView.
·        *Proven success in fund-raising for conservation science projects.
·        *Aptitude for working in a multi-cultural environment and developing good teamwork with scientists, national park staff, public officers, fishermen, marine reserve stakeholders, etc.
·        *Willingness and ability to communicate fully and continually with supervisors, and to involve others in planning and decision-making.
·        *Experience in coordinating research projects with management agencies, especially in protected areas.
·        *Ability to cope with the varying levels of isolation and the logistical problems associated with working on islands and in developing countries.
·        *Strong commitment to conservation principles.

Remuneration and Conditions:

The initial contract period for this position is two years.  An attractive salary will be offered, according to qualifications and experience. Benefits include translocation package, health insurance and 22 days annual vacation.  The post is envisaged as long-term and a candidate is sought who intends to stay in post for several years.

Overview:

I.M. Systems Group (www.imsg.com), a contractor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Silver Spring, MD, seeks an individual to serve as a Coral Program Specialist to coordinate coral reef program activities for either the Atlantic or Pacific Region.  This individual will work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP- www.coralreef.noaa.gov/) in the areas of program coordination, program development, strategic planning, partnership building, and information management.  

NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program supports effective management and sound science to preserve, sustain and restore valuable coral reef ecosystems.  This position is with the program’s National Marine Fisheries Service office in Silver Spring, MD. 

Core Responsibilities:

•           Manage regional coral reef efforts.  Facilitate and coordinate meetings.  Develop priorities and monitor performance.  Provide budget forecasting and prepare funding requests.  (May require travel to Pacific and/or Florida and the Caribbean regions occasionally.) 
•           Serve as office contact for the Coral Reef Task Force.
•           Participate in various Task Force working groups such as with the aquaculture and International Year of the Reef working groups.
•           Manage outreach and communication efforts for shallow and deep corals.  Participate in the implementation of the Communication and Outreach strategic plan. 
•           Support program strategic planning efforts including identification of priorities, development of performance measures, and implementation of an external program review process. 
•           Review and provide comments on CRCP documents and reports.  Assist with editing and formatting of technical reports.
•           Participate in Staff Evaluation and Assessment (SEA) team planning meetings, proposal evaluations, and internal team planning. 
•           Assist with coral reef conservation grants, including the NFWF coral grants.
•           Assist in the compilation and review of NMFS information for the State of Coral Reef Ecosystems of the United States report.
•           Assist with the development of a new deep-water coral program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The land steward develops and implements plans for the ecological and operational management of 24+ preserves that total approximately 18,000 acres, found primarily in the Central Appalachians, Piedmont and Chesapeake Bay Coastal Plain of Virginia.  S/he manages preserve operations, which includes maintaining public access to select preserves, posting boundaries and other signage as necessary, and reviewing hunt leases.  S/he leads invasive species control and management projects on priority preserves, collaborating with partners and overseeing contractors as necessary.   In addition, the Land Steward participates on the statewide Prescribed Fire Team.  The Land Steward responds to inquiries from public, community members and adjacent land owners about preserves while also handling and resolving preserve management issues and problems as they arise.  Land Steward coordinates with the Volunteer Program Manager to organize and supervise volunteer stewardship teams and hold volunteer stewardship workdays on preserves.  In addition, s/he supervises permanent and seasonal staff.   The Land Steward may advise or assist on land management issues in other areas of the state such as the Clinch Valley, Southeastern Virginia, and Virginia Coast Reserve program areas as well as West Virginia. 
 
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

•           Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and three to five years related work experience or related experience in land management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•           Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
•           Familiarity with general ecological principles and ability to conduct and direct ecological field work, with a broad grounding in the natural sciences and familiarity with the biological systems, flora and fauna of the ecoregions of Virginia.  Knowledge of current trends in conservation and land management, especially best current management practices and tools for invasive plant species control.
•           Experience in safe use and maintenance of preserve tools and equipment, including power and construction tools.
•           Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as prescribed burning (red card), first aid, CPR, herbicide application, driver’s license;  willingness and ability to obtain additional training in fire management.
•           PC familiarity, including database knowledge, in order to maintain preserve records.
•           ArcGIS and GPS skills required. 
•           Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:

•           Resolve complex preserve management problems independently, consulting with higher level manager as needed. 
•           Analyze situations, evaluate alternatives, and experiment to find and implement creative solutions.  Perform non-routine analysis, research and follow-through.
•           Demonstrate high degree of flexibility with changing circumstances and organizational priorities.
•           Design, implement, and direct multiple complex projects, setting and meeting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
•           Direct and monitor the progress of work groups toward achieving preserve management goals.

 

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

•           Make sound decisions based on analysis, experience and judgement.  Decisions will affect other staff in program area.   
•           Perform under minimal and frequently distant supervision, consulting with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general preserve management realm.

 

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

•           Supervise preserve steward and other staff as needed.  Responsible for performance management, training, and development.
•           Plan and direct preserve work groups, including other staff or volunteers.
•           Financial responsibility will include developing and working within a budget to manage preserve and complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, purchasing equipment and supplies as provided for in budget, and monitoring annual budget as needed to ensure appropriate spending limits.
•           Lease land for hunting purposes as appropriate for conservation goals.

 

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

•           Ability to clearly communicate work instructions to preserve management staff , volunteer manager, and volunteers. 
•           Work and communicate with a wide range of people – the public, program leadership, donors, and partners.  Ability to function productively as a leader or member of a work team.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

•           Ability to travel at least 3 days a week (day trips and overnights) during field season, possibly on very short notice, and work long hours.

•           Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain.

Staff members conduct tours providing in-depth interpretation on the ecology and history of Kiawah Island and the surrounding area. All staff members lead or assist in leading camping trips.  Pine Island sends out over 40 trips every summer during the season.  They range from 1 to 6 nights and include hiking, canoeing, and kayaking trips.  This is a fantastic place to work!

Position Description:

The CTP Coordinator plans, develops and coordinates training events and technical assistance activities for coastal decision-maker audiences in cooperation with partnering agencies and other reserves participating in this system-wide training program. Specifically, the CTP Coordinator will:

1. Develop, market, and implement training activities and provide relevant materials for coastal decision-maker audiences to address priority coastal environmental issues based on audience training needs.
2. Provide or facilitate technical assistance for decision-maker audiences. Technical assistance may involve any small group interaction in the form of ordinance and development plan reviews, community environmental assessments, or customized training on specialized subjects.
3. Develop, administer and analyze periodic audience needs assessments and incorporate the results into program planning efforts.
4. Coordinate program evaluation and implementation of system-wide CTP performance measures and apply results to improve the program.
5. Serve on the South Carolina Coastal Training Coordinating Committee and other relevant watershed, regional, or state-wide coordinating bodies and provide regular program updates to committee members, program partners, and other training providers.
6. Contribute to annual action plans and performance reports for the NIWB NERR, prepare program summaries and presentations for regularly scheduled meetings of the NIWB NERR Advisory Committee, and participate in NERR CTP activities at state, regional, and national levels including participation in NERR System-wide integrated workgroups, NERRS Annual Meetings, and NERRS CTP meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science field with at least three years of relevant work experience, or, Master’s degree in environmental science field, coastal resource management, or environmental policy with at least one year of relevant experience is required. Knowledge and experience in coastal ecosystems and coastal management or policy is also important. Experience in education program development, implementation and evaluation is desired. Candidates should also have excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and the ability to communicate effectively with adult audiences one-on-one and in small and large group settings. Familiarity with planning and regulatory processes at the local level, and facilitation experience is highly desirable. Experience with database management and website design and maintenance is also a plus.

Funding and Salary:

Full-time, grant funded position. Salary: $30,557 - $35,000, depending on experience. Health insurance, annual and sick leave, and retirement benefits provided.
