JOB DESCRIPTION:
Ensure that the land, water and conservation division is able to carry out its responsibilities with respect to water resources, land resources and the South Carolina geologic survey. The deputy director will ensure that within allocations provided in the state budget adequate resources are available to carry out program responsibilities. This includes the securing of appropriate personnel, sufficient fiscal resources and the collection and analysis of data necessary to make informed decisions concerning the sustainable, beneficial use of the state's land, water, geological and mineral resources.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor's degree in a natural resource program area, earth sciences, or in public administration and ten years of experience in natural resource management.
OTHER PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
This position requires considerable knowledge and experience to sustain the state's water and land resources and the geologic survey. The position is complex due to its varied nature and will require knowledge in technical and administrative areas, working with the public, conservation districts and the state's land and water users to carry out the goals of the division and department. The deputy director must be prepared to respond to changing circumstances and situations affecting or affected by the state's atmospheric, water and land resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Alabama Coastal Program Director directs all aspects of a multifaceted marine and estuarine conservation program, including science, restoration, and community relations activities for the near shore waters and barrier islands of Alabama and Mississippi. Position requires entrepreneurial leadership in continuing to grow a well-funded, community-based conservation program aimed at preserving biodiversity within several ecoregional priority conservation areas including East Mississippi Sound, Gulf Islands, Grand Bay, Mobile-Tensaw River Delta and Bay and Perdido Bay. The Program Director serves as the principal contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community. This may include the following functions:
• Coordinates the freshwater programs in South Alabama with Chapter staff and partners; integrates terrestrial, freshwater and marine conservation
• Expands the Conservancy’s reputation as a major marine conservation partner in a region
• Serves as senior conservation staff person for the Alabama Coastal Program
• Coordinates activities with both Alabama and Mississippi field offices
• Leads and manages team which supports and improves conservation efforts
• Works with Philanthropy staff to create a successful fundraising program, assisting in donor cultivation and fundraising efforts
• Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field
• Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices
• Develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural system needs
• Engages local community support for local conservation efforts

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• BA/BS degree and 3-5 years experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree is preferred. Marine experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in marine, estuarine and barrier island protection and restoration
• Knowledge of fundraising principles and comfort in talking to donors for the purpose of obtaining funds

DISTRICT EXTENSION SEA GRANT EDUCATOR
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Michigan Sea Grant, a joint program of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, promotes greater knowledge of the Great Lakes through research and education. Sea Grant Extension Educators are expected to plan, organize and implement university-based educational programs that apply knowledge and understanding gained through research to assist Great Lakes constituencies and communities in their districts to wisely interact with Great lakes resources.
Each Sea Grant Extension educator is expected to serve a variety of clientele groups, but no single educator can be an expert in all areas of concern to all prospective clients. Therefore, educators are part of a team within Michigan Sea Grant Extension and Michigan State University Extension specializing in particular areas of concern in their districts and sharing their knowledge and skills with colleagues in other parts of the state and Great Lakes Basin. The person in this position will be responsible for programs that focus on enhancing Great Lakes Fisheries; including sport, commercial and charter fisheries, recreation boating industries, sustainable coastal development, and environmental stewardship of the Lake Michigan coastline.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual selected is expected to work with the local constituencies, Sea Grant colleagues, and other Extension team members to identify key issues and develop educational initiatives that result in tangible benefit to constituencies and the resource. In concert with the Program Coordinator for Michigan Sea Grant Extension the educator will also develop performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of Sea Grant Extension programming.
Specifically, this educator will be expected to conduct, facilitate and support educational programs that focus on the improvement of Michigan’s Great Lakes ecosystem and its fisheries resources including such programs that assist in the understanding of commercial recreation, tourism development, water safety, water quality, waterfront development and preservation, coastal economic development, aquatic nuisance species, natural resources management, environmental education, wise use of the land and natural resources, and environmental stewardship.
This educator will also be expected to build and maintain a network of contacts with other groups interested in natural resource related issues to facilitate better communication and interactions between constituencies with appropriate natural resource agencies. The Sea Grant educator must have the ability to work with a variety of clientele groups that often have competing visions for the Great Lakes and help to facilitate the interactions of these diverse constituencies for the common good of the resource. This individual will also be expected to collaborate with community based organizations and utilize the skills and abilities of community volunteers and stakeholders to obtain local resources that supplement Sea Grant/MSU Extension efforts and extend and expand programming support.
The educator must be able to effectively work with natural resources agencies, constituent organizations, coastal communities, community residents, leaders and volunteers in identifying problem areas and opportunities for educational impact. This individual will identify informational gaps and work with researchers to develop research that addresses important issues.
This individual is responsible for working with Sea Grant and MSUE administrative team members to assure compliance with equal opportunity, affirmative action and other civil rights requirements. He or she will be responsible for meeting MSU Extension commitments to diversity/pluralism.
The educator will prepare required reports necessary for the Employee Development System (EDS) and assists the Regional Director, County Extension Directors and Coordinator of Sea Grant Extension in tabulating relevant information necessary for unit outreach and other reporting requirements, including EIS, and other MSUE or Sea Grant Extension reports.
It is expected that the Sea Grant educator will participate in appropriate in-service training and professional development activities that maintain program area effectiveness and competence in their educational roles.
The educator must also perform other duties as assigned as related to the mission of the program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Attainment of at least a Master's degree in an area directly related to fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. Background and working knowledge in fisheries, aquatic ecology and management, commercial recreation management, environmental education or related Great Lakes natural resources field.
Demonstrated effectiveness in leadership, facilitation, human relations, and written and oral communications. Experience in conducting effective Extension programming is highly desirable.
Proven record of working with Federal State and community based organizations and groups. Experience in establishing collaborations and community based initiatives.
Computer skills, including use of word processing, spread sheets, presentation software and the development of multimedia programs.
An understanding of educational program planning and successful experiences in proposal development. Experience managing operating budgets is desirable.

Duties:
This position will be assigned several areas of responsibility -
1.) Plans, observes, evaluates and participates in drills and spill responses of regulated vessels, facilities and response contractors. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plans, response equipment and personnel capability through realistic and strategically designed drills. Over the three year drill cycle, tracks the achievement by industry of the designated drill objectives, and the readiness status of major response equipment in the region. Participates in drill design and encouraging drills which will maximize demonstration of plan holders response capabilities and environmental protection. Meets the performance measures for timely evaluations of drills. Promptly and thoroughly records drill information in the Marine Information System (MIS) database
2.) Under the requirements of the joint federal and state protocol, reviews, analyzes and recommends plans for approval using both state and federal standards. Meets performance measures for timely reviews. Accurately maintains plan updates for each copy of the plan located throughout in the various program offices. Promptly and thoroughly records information in the MIS database. Provides technical assistance (internally and externally) on preparedness. Stays aware of and coordinates within the program on all major issues that relate to the regulated vessels and facilities that this position is assigned to manage.
3.) Assists with the development and maintenance of the geographic response plans. Participates in investigation and enforcement activities for regulated vessels and facilities. Participates on the Spills overhead team in positions designated on the team roster. Trains and demonstrates competency through DRILLTRAC. Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical, maritime or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field and five years of professional-level experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning which includes one year equal to an Environmental Specialist 3 or above or two years equal to an Environmental Specialist 2 or above. The Dewees Island Property Owners Association is now seeking a Landscape Ecologist with a strong background in landscape and wildlife management.
The responsibilities of the position include working with the Dewees Island community to promote and oversee landscaping with native plants, protection of critical maritime forest understory, management of wetland ecosystems, and eradication of invasive-exotic species. This individual will serve as a liaison between the Property Owners Association and regulatory agencies and serve as coordinator for Dewees Island's Architectural Review Board, providing staff oversight of the implementation of the island's design guidelines and island compliance with federal and state agencies.
The Dewees Island Property Owners Association is responsible for the operation and stewardship of Dewees Island, a 1,200-acre barrier island near Charleston, South Carolina. Dewees Island is a residential community dedicated to environmental preservation and is actively managed and home to several rare species. Restricted by the Island Covenant, only 150 home sites will ever be available on Dewees; each home is built under the peer and professional review of the Architectural Resource Board. There are no cars, golf courses, or manicured lawns on the island. Instead, the island boasts acres of flourishing live oak, pines, and palmettos, along with salt marshes and tidal wetlands teeming with fish, shellfish, alligators, and birds. The 2 ½-mile Dewees front beach and dune ecosystem is home to seabeach amaranth, shorebirds, and attracts nesting loggerhead sea turtles each year.
Specific job responsibilities:
1. Manage tidal wetlands for water quality and seasonal wildlife
2. Supervise vegetation management on private lots in collaboration with owners and landscape contractors
3. Encourage the restoration and succession of the maritime forest through selective cutting, planting, and removal of invasive-exotics
4. Collaborate with the Island Naturalist on related interpretive programs and signs
5. Monitor the erosion and accretion of the Dewees front beach, manage dune restoration where necessary, and supervise the construction and maintenance of dune crossovers
6. Serve as a liaison with State and Federal agencies for following construction guidelines, as well as for wildlife management
7. Inspect construction sites for compliance with the island's environmental philosophy and construction site regulations
8. Coordinate the Dewees Island Architectural Review Board (ARB): receive and disseminate architectural submissions, publicize meeting times and agendas, produce minutes and correspondence, review Guidelines and keep Guideline documents up to date and available for the community
Our Ideal Candidate has:
1. Master's or PhD, or B.S. and/or significant demonstrated experience in similar position
2. Expertise in plant taxonomy
3. Intimate knowledge of landscaping design and native plants
4. Knowledge of the ecology and cultural history of the southeastern coastal plain
5. Excellent interpersonal communications skills
6. The candidate must have an outgoing and engaging personality who can respond well to potential conflict situations
7. Ability to organize, coordinate, and recruit volunteers to assist with community projects
8. Demonstrated organizational skills in time management, paperwork, scheduling, and in meeting deadlines
9. Demonstrated skills in writing (web design and content-building a plus)
10. Ability to be an independent worker who accomplishes all responsibilities with minimal supervision
11. Excellent health and is capable of working in extreme heat with exposure to sun and biting insects
12. Ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism
13. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (experience with GIS is also desirable)
14. Willingness to earn CPR/First Aid qualifications

GENERAL
The mission of the Inland Seas Education Association is to foster aquatic science learning though experiential education and create a new stewardship for the Great Lakes. Inland Seas Education Association operates two schooners and a Friendship sloop as science and heritage classrooms on Lake Michigan and has recently established the Inland Seas Education Center on the Suttons Bay, Michigan waterfront. The Inland Seas Education Center is designed to compliment and expand ISEA's shipboard programs through on-shore programs for schools, community groups, families and the general public.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The Education Director has leadership responsibility for development, implementation and oversight of Great Lakes education programs aboard ISEA vessels and at the Inland Seas Education Center. Client groups include students in grades 1 - 12, teachers, youth groups, families and the general public. A corps of over 200 volunteers assists the Education Director. The Education Director reports to the Executive Director.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The employee will assist with scientific field sampling aboard the R/V Palmetto. Will also be responsible for basic laboratory tasks and logistical cruise support.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in biological sciences or equivalent, or be enrolled in such a program.
OTHER PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The ability to spend many days at sea (including weekends) and the ability to lift 75 pounds. Must be in good physical condition and be able to swim. Experience working in/on/around boats and in offshore environment preferred. Must be adaptable to working 6 hours on and 6 hours off schedule 24 hours/day while at sea. Up to three 10-day and ten 5-day cruises scheduled.

They are looking to hire 2-3 people to spend as much as three months at a shot in the Southwest on this project. Ideally you would have at least a BS/BA in geology, with some knowledge of geophysics and remote sensing, but they are prepared to train people, so anyone with a BS/BA in geology who wants to travel and is willing to work should submit a resume.
