The Charles Darwin Research Station solicits applications for our open position of Researcher in the Control and Eradication of Introduced Vertebrates. We are seeking a research-oriented individual to join our restoration ecology programs for the Galapagos National Park. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing, implementing, and realizing projects aimed at discovering efficient means by which the Galapagos National Park Service can monitor, control, and eradicate island populations of alien vertebrates. We seek an individual committed to the preservation of natural island-ecosystems who can work well at the interface of applied research and the management of protected areas in a multi-cultural setting.
The natural ecosystems of the Galapagos archipelago are threatened by a variety of introduced species. Goats, pigs, cats, rats, dogs, donkeys, cattle, horses, and mice are the most widely distributed alien vertebrates within the National Park; there are also problems with introduced frogs, fish, and birds. Our current priorities for research in control and eradication are goats, cats, rats, pigs, dogs, and mice; and these are the species we expect to be investigated first. The Researcher in the Control and Eradication of Alien Vertebrates will work directly within our vertebrates section. The successful applicant will have a research graduate degree with a PhD (or masters degree with five years of experience), research experience in the control and eradication of alien vertebrates, be able to speak and write well in Spanish and English, and have experienced living and working in remote settings.
The initial contract will be for one year, but will be renewable subject to further funding. While we envision hiring at the post-masters or post-doctoral level, we welcome applications from established researchers interested in spending sabbatical leaves at the CDRS. Transportation to and from Galapagos will be provided. Base salary is US $24,000 to US $28,000 p.a., according to qualifications and experience.
Benefits include health insurance and 22 days annual vacation.
