Love the Lagoon: Good Mate/Clean Marinas Program in Simpson Lagoon
St. Martin/St. Maarten

Environmental Protection In the Caribbean (www.epicislands.org) is seeking applicants for the position of Project Manager for the Love the Lagoon: Good Mate/Clean Marinas Program in Simpson Lagoon, St. Maarten. Period of employment: March 2007-March 2008. Responsibilities for this one-year position focus primarily on outreach and include:

1) Participating in a Clean Marinas training course in the United States.    
2) Organize, recruit participants, and run a Clean Marinas training workshop with local marinas. Provide follow-up assistance to trainees to meet Clean Marinas certification.    
3) Hold Love the Lagoon promotional events.    
4) Produce and distribute promotional and educational materials.    
5) Initiate boat to boat educational campaign.    
6) Press releases.    
7) School presentations.    
8) Monthly water quality testing.    
9) Install, publicize, and train others in use of oil spill response units.    
10) Assist in public forum on lagoon management.    
11) Write two phase reports and one final report on activities.

Because this is the sole position within the project, applicants must show evidence of ability to work independently with success. Qualified applicants will have excellent people skills and enjoy networking and encouraging community dialogue. Applicants should have previous experience with outreach and education including Power Point presentations. A working knowledge of marine environmental issues and writing skills are needed. Must be able to complete goals on a timeline. Familiarity with the maritime sector, particularly on St. Martin/Maarten, is a plus.

Applications are being accepted for the position of Coastal Training Program Coordinator for the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NIWB NERR.). The NIWB NERR is one in a network of 27 sites around the U.S. and its territories that make up the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS.) Reserves conduct research, monitoring, education and stewardship activities that can improve our understanding and management of coastal areas. The NIWB NERR is operated by the University of South Carolina’s Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences and is located at the Institute’s Field Laboratory near Georgetown, SC.

Position Description:

The CTP Coordinator plans, develops and coordinates training events and technical assistance activities for coastal decision-maker audiences in cooperation with partnering agencies and other reserves participating in this system-wide training program. Specifically, the CTP Coordinator will:

1. Develop, market, and implement training activities and provide relevant materials for coastal decision-maker audiences to address priority coastal issues based on audience training needs.

2. Provide or facilitate technical assistance for decision-maker audiences. Technical assistance may involve any small group interaction in the form of ordinance and development plan reviews, community environmental assessments, or customized training on specialized subjects.

3. Develop, administer and analyze periodic audience needs assessments and incorporate the results into program planning efforts.

4. Coordinate program evaluation and implementation of system-wide CTP performance measures and apply results to improve the program.

5. Serve on the South Carolina Coastal Training Coordinating Committee and other relevant watershed, regional, or state-wide coordinating bodies and provide regular program updates to committee members, program partners, and other training providers.

6. Contribute to annual action plans and performance reports for the NIWB NERR, prepare program summaries and presentations for regularly scheduled meetings of the NIWB NERR Advisory Committee, and participate in NERR CTP activities at state, regional, and national levels including participation in NERR System-wide integrated workgroups, NERRS Annual Meetings, and NERRS CTP meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science field with at least four years of relevant work experience, or, Master’s degree in environmental science field, coastal resource management, or environmental policy with at least two years of relevant experience is required. Knowledge and experience in coastal ecosystems, coastal management or policy, and education program development, implementation and evaluation is also essential. Candidates should also have excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to the ability to communicate effectively with adult audiences one-on-one and in small and large group settings. Familiarity with planning and regulatory processes at the local level, facilitation experience, website design/ maintenance, and data base design skills and experience are highly desirable.

Funding and Salary:

Full-time, grant funded position. Salary: $32,012 - $35,000, depending on experience. Health insurance, annual and sick leave, and retirement benefits provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Land Steward advances The Nature Conservancy’s conservation strategies on private and other lands. S/he provides management, technical and scientific support for conservation easement monitoring and compliance at the Virginia Coast Reserve. Related responsibilities include supporting staff with the preparation of new conservation easements, implementing habitat restoration projects, demonstrating and explaining ecologically sound land management practices, and documenting measures of conservation success.

DUTIES

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Monitoring and tracking conservation easements to ensure compliance with easement terms while maintaining productive working relationships and communications with private landowners. This involves managing and documenting the consent approval process, scheduling and conducting property visits with landowners, preparing monitoring reports, identifying and resolving compliance issues, and managing and updating the conservation easement database (GIS, maps, records and reports).

2. Collaborating with staff on the design and preparation of new conservation easements in accordance with the VCR Conservation Action Plan. This involves assisting with site inspections, mapping ecological and other conditions, making assessments of conservation values, and preparing Easement Documentation Reports.

3. Assisting staff and partners with habitat restoration and enhancement, invasive species control, and ecological monitoring projects on public, TNC and other private lands. This involves explaining conservation opportunities, goals, potential public and private funding sources, working with private landowners and partners to implement restoration projects, and monitoring and documenting results.

4. Installing and maintaining habitat restoration sites at TNC preserves that demonstrate effective and beneficial ecological management approaches to private landowners, TNC partners and supporters, and the general public. This involves sign posting, road and trail maintenance, habitat management, leading field trips, and performing other interpretive/outreach activities.

This position also requires participation with the Operating Unit’s prescribed fire team and may supervise contractors, interns and volunteers.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• BA/BS degree in science-related field and one to two years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required for easement monitoring, habitat restoration, preserve stewardship, and other responsibilities.
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource management.
• Managing time and diverse, multiple activities under deadlines while delivering high quality results
• Experience in safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment, including power and construction tools.
• Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as prescribed burning (red card), first aid, CPR, herbicide and pesticide application, driver’s license.
• Experience with MS Office, including Word and Excel, plus basic experience with data-base management.
• Experience with GPS and ArcGIS (or equivalent). 

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:

• Coordinate multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
• Compile and interpret data and modify plans as needed to accomplish goals under changing conditions.
• Resolve routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to resolve complex and unusual problems.
• Cultivate and develop creative concepts to improve conservation strategies and programs.
• Apply knowledge of diverse scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

• Make independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment.
• Perform under minimal supervision, consulting with supervisor in event of unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

• Supervise volunteers.
• May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area
• Supervise and monitor professional contractors.
• Financial responsibility may include working within/managing budgets to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

• Provide a variety of information to science, land protection, preserve, and other staff, contribute high quality input to conservation projects and assist workflow throughout the organization.
• Ability to speak effectively and persuasively to convey the mission of the Conservancy before diverse groups including donors, supporters, guests, board members, and others.
• Interact and communicate effectively with private landowners, partners, and visitors, to impart basic conservation concepts. Simplify and explain complex scientific material to general audiences, provide public outreach and lead field trips.
• Ability and willingness to work in a team setting in a highly decentralized organization.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

• Adverse working conditions in remote locations, long hours and possible weekend work.
• Capacity to handle complex tasks under pressure and under stringent time constraints.
• Ability to work in variable weather conditions, remote locations, and in physically demanding circumstances.
• Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation required.  Personal auto insurance applies.
• Work sometimes requires extreme physical exertion and/or physical strain to the point of physical fatigue.  Excellent physical fitness, which includes ability to meet National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) arduous fitness standards (carry 45 pound pack over 3 miles in less than 45 minutes).
• Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury.

The Wells NERR Coastal Training Program (CTP) is a regional forum supporting the creation and maintenance of collaborative knowledge networks for professionals whose work and decisions have impacts on coastal environments in southern Maine. Members of this network include coastal managers; planners; local, state and federal government officials; elected officials; private industry; agricultural interests; watershed groups and nonprofit organizations.

The Coastal Training Program serves this network by facilitating training and outreach programs to link and apply relevant science and technology with priority local issues and topics affecting coastal communities. The CTP designs and implements stakeholder processes to facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to ecosystem management. On occasion, in collaboration with partners, the Wells NERR CTP conducts programs and trainings that reach beyond southern Maine.

The CTP Associate works directly with the CTP Coordinator and program partners to coordinate activities within the network, develop workshops and trainings, and facilitate science translation. The CTP Associate provides administrative support including database management, performance measures monitoring, needs assessments, program evaluation and communication tasks related to the creation and maintenance of collaborative knowledge networks. Communication tasks include but are not limited to synthesis and analysis of coastal science for policy and management implications, preparation of press releases, media outreach, event scheduling and management and report writing.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a degree relevant to the interpretation, translation and communication of scientific information to both professional and lay audiences. Experience with coastal ecology, watershed planning, and resource management issues. Must possess strong communication skills including writing, public speaking and group facilitation skills. Must have excellent partnership building skills. Strong organizational skills and proficiency with desktop computer software and digital media such as LCD projectors, cameras and camcorders are desired.

Position Notes: This is a part time position, 32 hours/week. Grant funded position through December, 2007 with anticipated refunding annually. Appointment will be on a 12-mo. basis.

This position is located in Wells, Maine. The salary range is $12.50 - $13.50 per hour, and benefits are prorated for 32 hours per week.

Duties:

The Director Is responsible for the overall admin, program development, implementation and evaluation of all phases of seasonal environmental and wilderness programs educating over 800 highly motivated students annually. The director manages marketing and recruitment efforts; hires, trains and supervises instructional and support staff for programs ranging from 3-day class field trips to three-week wilderness leadership courses.
