ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Long Island Sound Program Director is responsible for The Nature Conservancy's engagement in marine and coastal conservation in Long Island Sound. This program area crosses multiple TNC state operating units, including Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. The Program Director will work closely with government agencies and other partners to build support and promote policies for the protection and management of Long Island Sound. He/She will engage relevant local communities, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations by developing multi-faceted, community-based collaborative initiatives. The Program Director will:
Ø serve as the program's primary contact;
Ø participate on a multi-chapter team to develop, guide, and review the program;
Ø organize and oversee the implementation of a variety of program activities;
Ø recognize and develop new opportunities to advance program goals;
Ø communicate regularly and effectively with a wide variety of people with different backgrounds and perspectives;
Ø work to secure necessary funding.
The Program Director will strengthen The Nature Conservancy's scientific knowledge of estuarine ecosystems and effectively communicate conservation needs. He/She will contribute to the Conservancy's global and regional marine conservation goals by coordinating with conservation and policy staff across the organization.
The Program Director will be supervised by the Director of Conservation Science in the Connecticut Chapter.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Long Island Sound Program Director will:
1. coordinate and facilitate the activities of chapter staff, contractors, and public and private partners in the research, planning, and implementation of priority conservation strategies to conserve the biodiversity of Long Island Sound;
2. develop and strengthen working relationships with local stakeholders, state and federal government agencies, and other potential partners to develop collaborations that advance conservation actions related to marine conservation goals;
3. facilitate and communicate regularly with a program team of staff and trustees in all three state chapters, the Eastern US Conservation Region, and the TNC global marine program to develop, refine, and measure progress on strategic and annual plans and budgets for our
marine conservation program;
4. promote and garner support for ecologically sound marine practices in Long Island Sound;
5. develop sound practices for evaluating success towards conservation goals;
6. serve as a spokesperson for The Nature Conservancy by articulating the purpose and importance of (and progress toward) marine conservation goals to potential partners and the general public through written communications, public speaking engagements, field trips, and participation in relevant conferences and workshops;
7. retain and oversee contractors, interns, and volunteers (as needed);
8. identify fundable projects, develop proposals, and successfully secure funding;
9. contribute to overall chapter goals by participating regularly in Conservancy-wide activities, including staff meetings, training sessions, annual meetings; and field trips;
10. perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
* BA/BS or advanced degree in field relevant to marine/coastal science and marine/coastal resource conservation AND at least 5 years on-the-ground experience in marine resource commerce, management, policy, planning, and/or coastal community action; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Demonstrated experience influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans.
* Familiarity with marine resource conservation, harvesting, and management issues, as well as familiarity with (or demonstrated ability to quickly learn) the institutional, cultural, and ecological aspects of the marine environment of the Long Island Sound and New York Bight.
* Experience developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
* Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Long Island Sound Program Director may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:

* present occasional possibility of injury;
* require long hours in isolated settings.

Information Manager Position
The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) seeks to hire an Information Manager to design and implement a complete database management system. Responsibilities will include archiving of research site locations and data sets, collecting and managing spatial data, developing web-based access to data and metadata, and fostering participation in our database management system. The UMBS, established in 1909, is one of the oldest, continuously running research field stations in the country. It offers 12 or more credit bearing course annually, fosters undergraduate and graduate student research, and hosts interdisciplinary research on biosphere-climate interactions, biodiversity, field ecology and organismal biology.
Duties
Develop a system for tracking current research projects and for organizing electronic materials as they are developed. Compile and maintain a list of current and completed UMBS-related research projects. Organize and archive historical datasets. Develop a strategy for prioritizing and archiving legacy datasets.
Help develop and implement a policy for archiving data and metadata for all researchers at UMBS and establish guidelines for posting data and metadata online. Develop standards for archiving data (e.g., backing up, security, etc.). Develop and implement QA/QC procedures for data management to datasets.
Create user-friendly webpage interfaces for metadata/data collection and access. Manage information flow by logging and tracking data. Document and post datasets online (e.g., climate, lake chemistry, forest plots, site GIS). Conduct regularly scheduled data audits.
Provide training in information management for scientists and especially graduate students at UMBS.
Maintain an up-to-date list of publications supported by the UMBS facilities.
NOTE: This position may be based at either the Ann Arbor or Pellston, MI campus, with a minimum of 8 weeks during the summer in Pellston at the Biological Station in Pellston (located at approx. a four hour drive north of Ann Arbor).
Departmental Qualifications: must have at least a Masters Degree in one of the environmental sciences; working knowledge of ArcGIS software suite; experience with relational database design, creation, and maintenance; familiarity with common data and metadata standards; experience with website development. Desired qualifications include: strong analytical and computer skills, patience and attention to detail, excellent communications skills, and the ability to work easily with others.

Overall Function
Environmental Defense is seeking to add a key member to our Southeast oceans team to advance regional and national projects to promote sustainable fishing of state and federal fisheries. With special focus on recreational fisheries, the Fishery Outreach Coordinator will develop and execute strategies to build capacity and awareness among fishing and related businesses and communities and assist them in developing and implementing innovative solutions to end overfishing and restore depleted fish stocks regionally and nationally. The position will be based in one of Environmental Defense’s Southeast regional offices and will report to the regional director of the Southeast Oceans Program in Raleigh, NC. The Coordinator will also work closely with the Ocean Program’s National Policy Director in Washington, DC.
Key Responsibilities
· Work under the direction of Environmental Defense’s regional director and with the oceans team to design, build support for, and implement pilot programs demonstrating innovative incentive-based fishery management strategies. Special emphasis on sport fisheries.
· Work with the Ocean Program’s National Policy Director to develop and implement national-level strategies aimed at improving recreational fisheries.
· Assist the oceans team in developing outreach and communications strategies that will inspire stakeholders and help build partnerships and support for new fishery management programs. Lead and coordinate on-the-ground outreach and communication efforts.
· Help the oceans team to analyze conservation and management of key fisheries.
· Work with the oceans team to develop comprehensive strategies to win the regulatory and legislative changes needed to implement new programs.
· Assist the regional director in the management of projects including developing milestones and timelines, monitoring progress, and coordinating the activities of consultants.
· Forge alliances among diverse groups in coastal communities including fishermen, local organizations and businesses, regulators and other government officials, community leaders and academics.
· Assist partners in developing their strategies and achieving our common objectives.
· Represent Environmental Defense in meetings with communities, regulators, and others and serve on relevant advisory bodies.
· Participate in Environmental Defense strategy sessions, annual retreat, and other important meetings.
Qualifications
· Degree in business, communications/marketing, fishery/natural resource management, marine policy or related discipline with at least 5 years of relevant experience preferred. Alternatively, significant experience working in the commercial or recreational fishing industry.
· Proven ability to work effectively with, and build common ground among, diverse groups. Ability to work constructively with government agencies, businesses, community groups and public interest organizations.

OIA’s Government Affairs team represents the outdoor industry’s interests in the legislative and policy development process. OIA works to promote trade legislation, funding for outdoor recreation and management policies on public lands that support active recreation.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Outdoor Industry Association is seeking a Government Affairs Associate to establish a Washington, D.C. office for our national trade association. This position will focus on shaping national outdoor recreation policy and advocating for federal public lands appropriations in support of the active outdoor recreation industry. The Government Affairs Associate will be based in Washington, D.C., but will work as a member of the OIA government affairs team based in Colorado.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING. OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED.
•Serve as OIA’s key point of contact on federal appropriations, national recreation legislation and administrative public lands policy.
•Attend Congressional hearings, prepare congressional correspondence and testimony, and attend meetings with congressional and administrative staff on behalf of OIA.
•Develop OIA position statements in collaboration with the Director and provide policy guidance and recommendations for OIA member companies. This includes preparing action alerts, monthly board reports and issue updates in support of OIA’s communications with its membership.
•Represent OIA on national recreation coalitions and advisory groups;
•Participate in the formulation of department plans and goals that are necessary to complete the strategic goals of OIA.
•Participate in the planning and execution of the OIA Capitol Summit held annually in Washington in April.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
•5 years experience in the Federal public policy arena
•Background in recreation and/or public lands policy
•Experience working in the federal authorization and appropriations process
•Strong preference given to candidates with experience working on Capitol Hill
•Strong interest in and affinity for active outdoor recreation
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
•Bachelor’s degree required.

Qualifications

b. Development of long- and short-range goals and plans,
c. Program evaluation, and
d. Budget preparation.
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent course work (144 quarter or 96 semester hours) in a field related to management, such as Business or Public Administration, or Wildlife or Fisheries Science or a related natural resources field, may be substituted for up to three years of the required experience, but will not substitute for the two years of specialized experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
Compensation
Salary: $4,308 - $6,675 per month. Generous benefits package. There will be an additional 3.2% salary increase effective November 1, 2008.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Outreach Specialist works closely with Conservancy, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff and other partners to develop, manage, and advance conservation programs, plans, and methods on private lands in the Big Bend reach of the Platte River in Nebraska. The position will be housed with the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners Program in the Grand Island Nebraska field office. Outreach Specialist will respond to landowner inquiries and maintain project records. He/She will work collaboratively with landowners and other conservation partners to oversee the implementation of conservation practices such as channel restoration, grazing management, grassland restoration and wetland restoration and enhancement. Work will include a combination of field and office including site visits, project monitoring, project record keeping and reports, use of GIS software and other data analysis. Position requires ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form, with private landowners, partners, donors, scientists and others. Outreach Specialist will be supervised by the Platte River Program Director, with an annual work plan and evaluation by the Platte River Habitat Partnership management team
MAIN DUTIES:
1. Provide outreach and technical assistance to landowners and others, including information about available local, state, federal and other programs, in an effort to facilitate habitat restoration and management practices in the project area.
2. Coordinate the collection of project related data for evaluation of program efficacy and long term ecological benefit.
3. Provide coordination with local, state and federal partners on program availability for habitat restoration and management.
4. Monitoring of restoration projects on private lands (i.e. are projects on schedule, what follow up work may be needed, is the management plan being followed correctly, etc)
5. Assist Conservancy staff with long-term protection of land in priority areas of the Big Bend stretch of the Platte s including data gathering for private lands projects, administering cost share programs and developing long term collaborative conservation tools.
6. Assist Service staff with the delivery of the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program in Central Nebraska.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Bachelor’s degree in applied social sciences, biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 1-2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of established scientific methods of adaptive management, riparian ecology and habitat management to perform recurring tasks of moderate complexity
• Working knowledge of USDA environmental programs
• Working knowledge of agricultural economics and agribusiness practices and the influence they may have on private lands habitat management
• Basic understanding of prairie stream hydrology, grassland ecology and wetlands management
• Demonstrated ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate project information from a number of sources to populate databases, create reports and produce manual files.
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Web browsers). Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and spoken) in small group setting and with larger groups and to work closely with a variety of people including conservation partners, farmers and private landowners.
