This position will be funded for three years during which time the Director is expected to design and implement a well-crafted program for stewardship efforts across the university. The broad goals of this program are (1) fostering a culture of respect for the environment among students, faculty, and staff and (2) minimizing the institution's environmental footprint. POSITION: Junior Landscape Analyst
LOCATION: Seattle, Washington
POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Exempt/Grade 8
SALARY RANGE: Competitive
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Landscape Scientist
START DATE: Immediately

Position Summary (General Description):

The Wilderness Society seeks a GIS analyst to join our Center for Landscape Analysis. This is an exceptional opportunity for a GIS professional to apply their scientific expertise to real world land conservation and management challenges and work in the nexus between science and public policy. We seek a GIS professional who can apply their GIS and natural sciences skills to perform GIS analysis and develop cartographic products to further our federal land management and conservation projects.

The primary goal of this position is to provide GIS support for our Forest Service programs in our Pacific Northwest and California/Nevada offices. This position will be a part of multidisciplinary teams and provide science-based GIS analysis to aid in the forest management planning for both regions. The position will also join the team of scientists making up our Center for Landscape Analysis (CLA) - a subset of our Ecology and Economics Research Department. Ten to Twenty percent of this position will be allocated as needed for transfer and application of the regional work to the national level and to other regions.

Initial work will involve supporting off road vehicle (ORV) management planning in the forests of California and strategic conservation planning in the North Cascade forests. The GIS work will involve the collection and preparation of GIS datasets, performing GIS analysis, developing cartographic products, and creating text products stemming from the spatial analyses. The work will also involve working closely with interdisciplinary teams of staff including ecologists, regional conservation specialists, and communications specialists. Among many issues we expect the work to involve are ORV and recreation planning, transportation management, habitat fragmentation, roadless area protection and wildlife protection. The position will be responsible for developing analytical products to illustrate threats to the forest landscape and improved management solutions that address those threats.

At a minimum, the ideal candidate will have a master's degree in the natural sciences (including GIS training) and 2 to 3 years experience in the application of GIS in the natural resource sciences. More extensive experience may be substituted for the advanced degree. Experience with forestry and ecology is also highly desirable. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

o Work closely with program teams and partner organizations to develop and integrate GIS work serving the goals of the program.

o Help foster a productive and collaborative work environment.

Qualifications:

o Master's degree in the natural sciences or equivalent experience. Specific experience in forestry, ecology, wildlife biology or land management and policy is desirable.
o A minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in research or applied science GIS projects using ArcGIS. Remote sensing experience would be a plus, but is not required.

o Ability to stay on schedule and meet deadlines.
o Experience writing scientific papers or reports.
o Experience working with the U.S.D.A. Forest Service is desirable.
