• In addition, you will need a small (5 1/2" X 8 1/2") black three-ring notebook, a one-hole punch, and a standard size two-pocket folder.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

• This is a basic course designed to provide the opportunity to understand and interpret various forms of literature through analysis and performance.

COURSE GOALS:

• To apply the characteristics of "good" literature when choosing a selection to prepare.
• To acquire the ability to interpret with integrity a literary selection; and to be able to communicate that interpretation to an audience with believability, honesty, clarity, and artistry.
• To learn and practice the basic techniques of studying prose, drama, and poetry through performance.
• To learn more about you as a result of the interpretation process.
• To learn listening skills.
• To be able to accept and give constructive criticism.

PERFORMANCES:

1. Self-disclosure reading
2. Developing voice/body/sense memory exercise (eval form)
3. Narrative prose
4. Drama duo
5. Poetry duo/solo
6. Final Performance/program

PERSONAL FOLDER:

• Immediately after each performance, place your performance script, journal entries, and the analysis as required for each assignment in your pocket folder and turn it in.
• One day after your performance submit a self-critique and a critique of one other performance.

CRITIQUES:

• The instructor will provide written and oral critiques to all speakers. Each class member is expected to submit a self-critique and a critique of one other performer for each assignment, except for the self-disclosure assignment.
• Extra credit (5 points each, up to three) may also be earned by attending performance events (approved by the instructor) and by submitting a brief critique of each event.

WRITTEN WORK:

• All written work submitted, except journal entries, must be typed in a 10 or 12 font. Use proper writing style as spelling and grammar errors count in your grade.

ATTENDANCE:

• Since communication is a process that requires both speaker and listener, your attendance at all classes is necessary for you to fulfill the needs of this class. You will be participating at all times either as a performer or a listener/critic. Ten points will be deducted from your total points for each absence in excess of three. The only exception to this penalty is for verified medical reasons or emergencies. Three tardies or leaving classes early equals one absence. A student will be dropped from this course for excessive absences (i.e., 25% or more of the scheduled classes). In addition, if you miss a scheduled performance, any make up performance is at your instructor's discretion and will carry a 20% penalty for that assignment. Therefore, a make up performance can receive no grade higher than a C+.
• There is no automatic right to make up a performance.
• For those students who maintain a perfect attendance record, a bonus of five points will be added to the final grade.

• Students that miss or will need to miss class to do the following: (From the Absence Memo Office)

  * Come to 67 George Street (white house next to Stern Center) to discuss absences and fill out the appropriate forms.
  * Call 953-3390 and ask for Constance Nelson if they have questions.
  * We do have the forms online at: http://www.cofc.edu/studentaffairs/general_info/absence and they also can be faxed to our office at 953-2290.
  * They will need documentation for health, personal or emergency situations.
  * Athletic Teams and school sponsored trips will have documented lists of students participating on our letterhead as early in the semester as we get the information from the organization. We would like all information on scheduled outings to reach us at least two full weeks in advance. We will then turn the information back to the coach or advisor. The students themselves are responsible for getting this to their individual faculty members.

  
  
  Disabilities accommodation statement: Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet course requirements, should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make such accommodations as may be necessary. The deadline for student notification of the instructor concerning the need for such arrangements is January 29, 2008.
  
  Grades will not be discussed in class. If you wish to dispute a grade, wait twenty-four hours, then make an appointment to see me during office hours.
