The College of Charleston Science Center is located in the heart of the
Historic District.
|
The Department of Geology is
housed in the Science Center pictured at the right. The department occupies
half of the third floor and portions of the first floor. A number of
labs are available for student use including a paleontology lab, a lab
to study sediments and cores, a water chemistry lab, a rock lab for
rock and sediment sample preparation and a Scanning Electron Microscopy
Lab. Computer resources are plentiful and include a new GIS training
facility, a remote sensing computer lab, and numerous networked Macs,
PCs and UNIX machines throughout the building. A quiet place to study
is provided to all geology majors in the Geology Student Reading Room.
Located on the ground floor, the Reading Room contains a conference
table, a bank of computers, comfortable couchs and chairs, and a small
library of geologic literature.

The new state-of-the-art Santee Cooper GIS training facility
was dedicated in May 1997. This facility was made possible through a generous
$150,000 gift from Santee Cooper Electric Cooperative and matching grants from
a variety of hardware and software vendors. The lab consists of 20 fully networked
individual computer workstations, a teacher workstation and an overhead computer
projection system. Workshops and classes in GIS and remote sensing occur throughout
the year in support of a number of students conducting research in these subjects.
