Commended as the “Best Undergraduate German Program in South Carolina” by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, the German Program at the College of Charleston offers students a wide array of curricular options, extramural activities, and well as opportunities to live and study or work in a German-speaking country.
Courses in the German major and minor encompass not only literature, but also German culture, history, politics. In addition, students may take a two-course sequence in Business German. Class sizes are small, and students are able to work closely with their professors.
The German Studies minor allows students with a broad interest in things related to German culture to design a personalized curriculum.
Study Abroad options include one or two-semester-long programs with the Universität Tübingen and the Universität Bamberg. Students may also work in Germany during the summer on a three-month internship program in a field of their interest.
Extracurricular opportunities to speak German include internships with one of the 130 German companies located in South Carolina, weekly Stammtisch meetings with other students of German, and an active and visible German Club with activities such as the annual Oktoberfest at Wild Dunes and the German Film Festival.
As the second most-widely spoken language in Europe, and the language of Europe’s financial and economic center, a knowledge of German can give students an edge in competing successfully for jobs and placement in graduate programs.
