LAYLON WAYNE JORDAN (U.S. Colonial, Revolution, 19th Century, South Carolina) received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1972. He has taught at the College of Charleston since 1970 and was Visiting Lecturer at the University of New Brunswick in 1978. Co-author of Intellectual Life in Antebellum Charleston and South Carolina and the Sea, he has published a variety of articles on nineteenth century American and Southern institutional, urban, and intellectual history. His most recent work is a history of St. John's (Colleton) Parish. A biography of Christopher Memminger--German immigrant and Charleston lawyer, businessman, politician--is in progress.
