PETER McCANDLESS (History of Medicine, Modern British) received his Ph.D. in Modern British history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974. McCandless came to the College of Charleston in 1974. He is the author of Moonlight, Magnolias, and Madness: Insanity in South Carolina from the Colonial Period to the Progressive Era (1996). He has also published a number of articles on the history of mental illness and related subjects in Britain and the United States. His current research is on disease and medicine in early Carolina
