News from the Director:

Program News

We've got a lot of changes in store for the graduate program. We're recruiting now for the new African American literature concentration; we've got students already enrolled in the new internship hours (both students this semester are interning with composition teachers); comps are changing (see this month's Highlight); we're saying goodbye to three fine students, who will graduate this May; and we're getting geared up for a one-day retreat this summer for a strategic plan for the M. A. program.

Monthly Meeting

Be sure to make it to this month's graduate student meeting, if you can (8 April, Thursday night, 7:30, at the downtown Sticky Fingers). Dr. David Allen and I will both be on hand to talk about the new format for the comprehensive exam. We'll be asking your opinion on some crucial details regarding the Spring comps--should we use one reading list for the whole year, or publish a new list each six months?--so come ready to speak up.

I'll also come with a blank pad and a pen full of ink to take down your ideas for the graduate program in general: anything at all you want to tell me, but in particular strengths and weaknesses of the program. This information (coupled with the data we've gathered from the self-assessment) will help us plot a long-term course for the M. A.
