News from the guest editor:

This book of just over two hundred pages is densely packed with history, philosophy, and spirituality, as well as offering a romping sea yarn, so we had fertile material for our class discussions and position papers. Most of us truly enjoyed the depth and richness of the work. Thus, when we learned that Dr. Johnson had been invited as the College’s convocation speaker, we decided to publish an extra issue of Colophon devoted entirely to Middle Passage – an issue in which students from Dr. Frazier’s class could publish their position papers. Dr. Johnson also kindly agreed to answer our questions about the novel. We hope that this issue will enhance this year’s convocation experience and enrich our understanding of Middle Passage.

We offer our sincere thanks to Dr. Valerie Frazier for introducing us to Dr. Johnson and his work and to Dr. Charles Johnson for his great kindness in allowing grad students to partake of his time and pick his astounding brain.
