Psychology 250: Psychological Statistics & Research Methods
Pre-semester Textbook Information and Links to Authors' Student Web Sites
Syllabus (Section 1) - to be posted 1 week before classes begin
WebCT This password-protected "private web" site is available only to students in my Psychology 250 class. This is where you will go to take daily online quizzes, peruse resources used during class (e.g., graphics, PowerPoint slideshows), and check your grades.
Most of the resources developed for this class will be posted on my WebCT home page as we use them during the semester. The links posted below are general in nature, and you may find some to be useful adjuncts to the WebCT resources. Although I obviously cannot vouch for the accuracy of the content of each site, each appears to be worth a look. Perhaps the most useful web-based resources for this class will be found at the student web sites for your textbooks (see the first link above).
General Statistics Links
The Rice Virtual Lab in
Statistics was developed by Dr. David Lane at Rice University.
It is a wonderful collection of statistics resources -- Hyperstat Online (an
online textbook), Java applet statistics simulations, and actual data-based
case studies illustrating the use of statistical principles.
Electronic
Statistics Textbook This is
a good online review and general reference book made available by the StatSoft
company.
Online Statistical Calculation A number-cruncher's delight: Many
links to web pages that perform statistical calculations online, as well as
links to free statistical software, online statistical manuals and tutorials,
and so on. Compiled by a biostatistician, John C. Pezzullo, of Georgetown
University.
BolderStats
Java Applets were developed for use in statistics classes at the
University of Colorado. They provide interactive demonstrations of statistical
principles related to normal distributions, correlation scatterplots, and so
on.
Statistics
at Square One (Ninth Edition), an excellent online textbook by
T.D.V. Swinscow, revised by M. J. Campbell, University of Southampton.
General Research Methods Links
The
Knowledge Base An online research methods textbook--excellent,
comprehensive source of research methods topics (e.g., interaction effects,
quasi-experimental designs, factorial designs) written by Dr. William Trochim
of Cornell University.
AmoebaWeb,
an extensive collection of research methods links on numerous topics (e.g.,
reliability, program evaluation, scales of measurement, how to construct a survey),
is maintained by Douglas Degelman at Vanguard University of Southern California.
Research
Methods Tutorials Web projects by graduate students at Cornell
University (examples of topics include correlational designs, regression to
the mean, reliability).
Psychology
Tutorials and Demonstrations Part of an excellent website
at Hanover College (examples of topics include internal validity tutorial, demonstrations
in auditory and visual perception.
"Name
That Threat" Examples of threats to internal validity
taken from Huck and Sandler's book, Rival Hypotheses.
APA Style, Library and Internet Research
Psychology with Style
Written by Dr. Mark Plonsky, University of Wisconsin) -- a very useful online
guide to writing research papers in APA style. The guide was updated in
2004 to the current (5th) edition of the Publication Manual.
E-Journals
and Databases The best online database for references and abstracts of
professional articles in psychology is PsycINFO. The College of Charleston
Library also provides full-text access to over 40 high-quality APA journals, such
as the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, American
Psychologist, Neuropsychology, and Psychological Review, via the PsycARTICLES
database If you are a student at the College and wish to use these databases, this
link will take you to the list of all of the College's databases. Click
"P" to go to the PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES links (if you are off-campus, be
sure to login to "Off-Campus Access" first). Two other useful
psychology-related databases are Medline and the InfoTrac Expanded Academic
Index.
I am amazed at the number of e-journals (electronic journals) and databases that our College Library carries -- and most with access to full-text articles! For example, the journals Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Brain and Cognition, and Neuroscience are carried in the ScienceDirect database, and the journal Annual Review of Psychology and Journal of Applied Psychology are carried in the Business Source Premier database.
