About Me

There is more to my life than teaching at the College of Charleston. Explore the links below to find out more about the “real” Bonnie McCarty!

Music has always been an important part of my life. I play the guitar and sing. For many years I was involved in coordinating Very Special Arts festivals and programs. I am still looking for places to “do” my music in Charleston that fit my work schedule. I love to contra dance, and to listen to great live music. I own an Independent Record Label called Dr. Mac Records. We are currently working on a new project called “Philanthropy” which will showcase Keith Williams’ vocal renditions of jazz standards and Phil Morrison’s original tunes written in straight ahead stylings. Shrine of the Bab Faith is where I find my strength to face my busy life with grace. I am a member of the Baha’i Faith. In Charleston, we are busy getting ready to open the Louis G. Gregory Baha’i Museum. I am the adviser for the Baha’i Club on campus. I teach children’s classes which are open to all who want to learn about the oneness of God, Religion and Humanity. Classes are the first and third Mondays of each month.

Travel is how I continue my education and refresh my spirit. I have had the bounty of journeying outside the United States to South Africa and Swaziland, Poland, China, Canada, and Israel. I have actually spent time in all of the 48 continental United States. I have climbed to the top of Mt. Whitney-the highest point in the continental US, and also have made it to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park in California (my home state). I continue to love to spend time in the wild outdoors, but also enjoy luxuriating at fine hotels and restaurants. Diversity and Variety are the spice of life. Bonnie's visit to China.

Family is central to my life as well. My parents live on lovely St. Simons Island, GA., which I still consider my home base since I also lived there for a long time. My brother and his family live in Pleasanton, CA, close to where we all grew up. My sister and her family live in Tucson, AZ. So I get a taste each year of this beautiful country we live in! Most of my extended family lives in the Central Valley of California amidst the grape vineyards, orchards and cotton fields. My “hearthome” will always be Northern California. Friends are really my extended family. I have so many friends all over world. My friends enrich my life. I learn so much from them.
