Center of Excellence for the Advancement of New Literacies in Middle Grades

Mission and Goals

The Center's faculty works collaboratively with targeted middle schools to assist in developing meaningful new literacies teaching strategies and activities in order to improve student achievement.

Our purpose is to impact student engagement and achievement in academic learning through:

  • presenting bi-annual professional development institutes
  • providing a graduate level professional development course for interested teachers
  • presenting monthly professional development to middle level teachers

  • modeling new literacies strategies in classrooms

  • researching students' interestes in and uses of new literacies strategies
  • research teachers understanding and implementation of new literacies strategies in classrooms

  • conducting classroom observations and sharing feedback with classroom teachers

  • infusing new literacies strategies in literacy courses to undergraduate and graduate students preparing for careers in education.
