Elise,

         We have had four or five informal lunch-meetings since the
first 
of May.  Most of our discussion has been about the Retreat, as it seems 
important to make plans for the event should we decide to hold it near
the 
beginning of the fall semester.  David and I have tried with the special

help of Bob, George, and Alex, to get something down on paper, even if 
there is not complete agreement.  In fact, it is clear that more
discussion 
is needed about all aspects, but it still seems desirable to apprise you

and to distribute the thoughts that have been generated to all members
of 
the Committee.  (See attached MS Word file.)  We need more discussion by

all the members.  Kay's input will be particularly helpful when she
gets 
back to town.

           The rest of us probably shouldn't do any more at all till you

have had a chance to review what has been said and to give us guidance.

         I hope others of you will correct these notes if you see you
see 
omissions or other errors in what I have reported.
