From: GenEdCommittee [GENEDCOMMITTEE@LISTSERV.COFC.EDU] on behalf of Gordon Jones [gej36@COMCAST.NET] Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 10:49 AM To: GENEDCOMMITTEE@LISTSERV.COFC.EDU Subject: Addendum to March 2 Meeting Notes The Committee comments reported in the Meeting Notes regarding the CIRP data will be made more complete by the addition of the following remarks made during the discussion by Pam Niesslein. Please include these in your records. Thanks. The CIRP is SELF-REPORTED student data from a subset of our student body. In 2001, our data collection methods for CIRP were haphazard at best and we only have 700+ responses, while the 1532 responses from 2004 are much more representative of our student body. Also, I don't see any independent verification of these numbers from official CofC data sources (i.e., ethnic background is available through IR and should be correlated to the CIRP results to verify before doing any comparative data and drawing conclusions). Some of the opinion questions certainly do give us good and valid data (i.e., the questions on culture, involvement, etc.), but some others (e.g., parental income, High School GPA) should be viewed skeptically until they can be cross-tabbed with other available data for verification purposes.
