Orientation Overview

Every year the College of Charleston introduces over 2000 incoming freshman and transfer students to the campus. New Student Programs would like to welcome you to the College of Charleston legacy, a family tradition since 1770. We strive to make your adjustment to student life is successful. Now that you are officially admitted, the College of Charleston invites you to participate in the New Student Orientation, “Bridge to the Future”!

Orientation is a two-day program designed to help new students make a smooth transition to the College. All new students are expected to participate in orientation before classes begin. Check in for orientation occurs in the Cougar Mall. Additional information will be included in the informational booklet.

During orientation, students will have the chance to :

  • meet other incoming students
  • meet an academic advisor
  • register for classes
  • meet faculty from various programs om campus
  • learn about the campus and the services that are offered

Family orientation is a two-day program designed for the families of new College of Charleston students. It runs concurrently with new student orientation, and we encourage adult family members to attend. If your family has questions, they can email parents@cofc.edu.

The fee for family orientation is $25 (non-refundable) per family member and covers the costs of orientation, materials, and lunch during orientation on the day of your choice. You can register your family for family orientation on the student reservation form.

During these sessions family members will get an overview of campus support services and have an opportunity to hear from a variety of faculty and staff members. Family members will have an opportunity to:

  • meet family members of other new students in a small group setting
  • tour a residence hall
  • talk to currently enrolled students
  • learn about campus technologies
  • explore career-planning resources

If you have questions regarding orientation, please email orientat@cofc.edu or call our office at 843-953-2017.

January 2009 Orientation Session

Orientation registration information will be mailed out weekly to students who have paid their enrollment confirmation deposit to the Office of Admissions beginning in November 2008.

Orientation session confirmations can be viewed 7 days after completing the online registration by logging back into Cougar Trail.

January Orientation Thursday-Friday January 8-9

At the College of Charleston, course options will be available at each orientation session since seats are held open for each of the orientation session. Courses that may appear closed on Cougar Trail may have seats open when new students register on the second day of Orientation. This allows new students to have a chance to select the courses they may want. The "perfect" schedule may not be available, but all students should be able to register for a full load of classes that will fulfill their core curriculum and degree requirements. New students should be prepared to be flexible and should not rule out registering for classes that begin as early as 8 a.m. or late in the afternoon. Students who are not satisfied with their schedule can change it on Cougar Trail after their orientation session until the end of the drop/add period for the semester.

Nontraditional and Special Needs Students - Call Us!

Call New Student Programs (843-953-2017) if you have been admitted for the upcoming academic year and are 23 years or older (born the year of 1983) to arrange an express schedule for one of the ten orientation sessions. An express schedule allows our office to coordinate the essential portions of orientation which apply to you.

For example, the College of Charleston placement tests in foreign language, math and technology must be completed before you can be advised and registered for classes. If you have not satisfied the College’s transfer requirements in math, six hours above college algebra, you will be required to take a math placement test. When you contact us, we will determine which placement tests you need while discussing your express schedule for orientation. You should not complete the student reservation form.

If you have special needs because of a disability, please call our office at (843) 953-2017 so we can make appropriate arrangements. For more information about services available to you at the College, contact the at Center for Disability Services at (843) 953-1431.

We want you to have fun at school but don't party away your financial aid!

Individuals arrested for the possession or sale of any illegal drug or alcohol may become ineligible for various types of financial aid. Check out the What Are You Prepared to Lose brochure for detailed information.

Check out the Better Things To Do website for more information.
