FITNESS PROFICIENCY STANDARDS
LEARNING OUTCOME
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science
in Physical Education, students should possess personal fitness traits
to command respect as role models from the society which they serve.
Therefore, future professionals must demonstrate a basic fitness level
in the area of muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body
composition and cardiorespiratory endurance, as well as an ongoing participation
in weekly fitness activities. Students with special needs will be
accommodated.
CRITERIA (OBJECTIVES)
I.
Students will be advised of the standards for
fitness that must be met when receiving a Departmental Handbook at the
time of entering the program as a major. These minimum standards
are as follows:
Muscular strength and endurance
sit-ups in one minute: 38 for females and 42 for males. Push-ups: 30
for females, from the knees, and 37 for males. (Cooper Institute for
Aerobics Research)
Flexibility
23 centimeters on the sit and reach test.
Body composition
percent body fat as measured by skin fold caliper - 28% body fat or
less for females and 20% or less for males.
Cardiorespiratory endurance
one mile run - 8:10 min or 40 ml/kg/min for females and 7:00 min or
45 ml/kg/min for males.
II.
Students will take a pretest in the Introduction
to Physical Education course which is a prerequisite to other major
courses at the 300 level or above.
III.
Students will be asked to provide a journal that
substantiates the method used to develop the deficiencies noted on the
pretest at the entry level, as well as ongoing fitness weekly activities.
IV.
A final test over these components of fitness
will be administered in the Organization and Administration course taken
in the last year. All students must demonstrate proficiency in
each component regardless of their initial results, as well as documentation
as to ongoing fitness pursuits on a weekly basis. This will insure that
as professionals graduating from the College of Charleston Physical
Education and Health Department these graduates can serve as role models
of basic fitness to our society.
STUDENT LEARNING
I.
The benefits of personal fitness and/or
the need to be a role model will be presented in the following
courses:
PEHD 201 Introduction to Physical
Education*
HEAL 216 Personal and Community Health
PEHD 340 Exercise Physiology and
lab
PEHD 431 Test & Measurement
PEHD 458 Organization and Admin.of
Physical Education*
* indicates that the fitness components will be administered for pre/post
testing.
II.
Projects that demonstrate student work as to
deficiencies and /or ongoing participation in methods of personal fitness
will be completed.
III.
Group presentations as to the need for being
a role model in the profession will be required.
IV.
Projects to demonstrate the physiological need
for fitness in the major as well as in the society.
V.
Research presentations as to fitness benefits
to our culture.
VI.
Examinations demonstrating a knowledge base of
physical fitness components and how to maintain these components.
VII.
Each advisor will ask for information as
to ongoing fitness activities and progress in meeting the basic
standards of fitness of his/her advisees. The Godsen Award will
be discussed.
ASSESSMENT
I.
Performance of components of fitness
must be demonstrated as listed in the standard above to complete
10% of the Organization and Administration of Physical Education course.
Minimum standards must be met to successfully pass this portion of the
course. Ninety percent of the students must pass this objective.
II.
To monitor a student's ongoing fitness activities
and progress toward meeting the basic standards of fitness, each
advisor will ask for a verbal report during each advising session.
A check sheet will be maintained by each faculty member who advises
in the major to determine whether this objective is being met.
To pass this objective, 80% of the advisors must report that 80% of
their advisees are currently engaged in a fitness program.
III.
A research project related to fitness will be
averaged as 10% of the Work Physiology course. A grade of 80%
will be considered acceptable. Fitness and role model related
projects and group presentations in Analysis of Physical Performance,
Introduction to Physical Education and Personal and Community Health
must be completed and passed at the 80th percentile, as well.
IV.
Successful completion (70 % or more) of the examination
questions relating to fitness on the Departmental Examination as well
as in each course listed above.
V.
The Godsen Fitness Award will be awarded to the
female and male student scoring the highest on the standard by the end
of the 2002-03 academic year. (Criterion will be noted in the handbook.)
