Astronomy & Astrophysics Research
Outside Research Opportunities
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has a very broad summer program of Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in many fields. The research is at major research institutions all over the country and in many disciplines. Our students have had much success in these programs -
- Atmospheric Sciences
- Chemistry
- Earth Sciences
- Engineering
- Mathematical Sciences
- Ocean Sciences
- Physics
- Materials Research
- Astronomical Sciences
- Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers
- Science and Technology Centers in Materials and Physics
Here is a complete list of NSF REU sites

Physics Research
- Mikhail Agrest has research interests in fluid mechanics and membrane science.
- Linda Jones has a strong research group in biomedical optics. See a close-up of her research.
- Narayanan Kuthirummal is interested in the spectroscopic, acoustic, and microscopic characterization of photonic materials, nanomaterials, and aerogels. See a close-up of his research.
- Ana Oprisan is interested in the theory and experiment of fluids near the critical point, large scale fluid flow, and diffusion limited aggregation. See a close-up of her research.
- Sorin Oprisan's research fields are computational neuroscience, statistical physics and swarm intelligence. See a close-up of his research.
- Norris Preyer does computational physics with his computer cluster. Among other things he simulates electrical current flow and light propagation through biological tissues. See a close-up of his research.
- Alem Teklu uses acoustic and microscopic techniques to characterize metals, alloys, composites, thermoelectrics, and nanocrystals. See a close-up of his research.
- Jeff Wragg does optics and lasers, microscopy, and dabbles in some astrophysics.
Meteorology & Atmospheric Physics
- Lee Lindner investigates terrestrial and martian atmospheres.
- Laney Mills has research interests in climate modeling and chaos.
