Earthquake Awareness Week | November 4-10, 2007

Damage of buildings downtown Charleston during the 1886 earthquake The South Carolina Education and Preparedess Program (SCEEP) is working with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) to promote public earthquake awareness throughout the state of South Carolina during the week of November 4th. The week will be filled with numerous fun and engaging learning opportunities, such as earthquake drills, teacher workshops, lectures, and tours. Information on each of those events is below. In addition, visit your local library for general information on earthquakes and more specifically South Carolina earthquakes.

While earthquakes may seem foreign to us here in South Carolina, actually over the past 150 years, minor earthquakes have occurred in most parts of the state. Therefore, it is important to raise our own awareness of what they are, why they occur here, and what we can do in preparation for them. We hope you will join us for one or more of the following activities!

All of the following activities are open to the public and are co-sponsored by SCEEP, SCEMD, and the College of Charleston Dept. of Geology and Environmental Geosciences. Please join us during Earthquake Awareness week as we explore the past and future of Charleston Earthquakes. For more information please see one of the following websites!

  • 1886 Earthquake Walk: The public is invited to come for an hour-long tour of 1886 earthquake damage still visible in downtown Charleston.

  • The GREAT 1886 Charleston Earthquake! A talk by Dr. Tim Mays of the Citadel Engineering Dept, this talk is designed for the public and will be an exciting new look at the 1886 earthquake and its damage. Everyone welcome, reception to follow.
