The South Carolina Space Grant Program supports undergraduate and graduate research opportunities in the space sciences and related fields with various programs. Each year, undergraduates and graduates have the opportunity to participate in research during the summer and/or throughout the year in ongoing projects sponsored by NASA. Please consult the Consortium Members to obtain contact information for each Space Grant school representative.

Graduate Student Research Program Fellowship (GSRP) —due Friday
02.13.09 The GSRP is designed to help meet the continuing needs of the aeronautics and space effort by increasing the number of highly trained scientists and engineers in aerospace, space science, space applications and space technology. The GSRP Program awards fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Fellowship money awarded by the SC Space Grant Consortium will be administered through the Financial Aid office at the scholar's institution. A maximum of $10,000 will be awarded from the SC Space Grant Consortium, which must be matched 1:1 by the host institution, the total being applied toward a graduate fellowship. + Download Application [PDF | DOC] |

Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship —due Friday
02.13.09 Two types of Undergraduate Research Awards are available, each $5,000. Up to $500 of the $5,000 will be available for research related expenses, not including any application fees. The applicant may select which one they wish to apply for:

Kathy Sullivan Fellowship —due Friday
02.13.09 As a NASA Mission Specialist, a veteran of three Space Shuttle missions, and as a geologist and oceanographer, Dr. Kathryn Sullivan has gained extensive experience both at sea and in space. This award honors Dr. Kathryn Sullivan. The amount of the award will be a maximum of $7,000 to cover the cost of tuition, fees and books during the student's senior year. The Kathryn Sullivan fellowship is jointly funded by the SC Sea Grant Consortium and the SC Space Grant Consortium. The award will be administered by semester; half awarded the first semester and half the second. Selection for the awards are based on - a) the academic qualifications of the applicant, B) two letters of recommendation, c) a description of past activities, current interests, and future plans concerning a space science or aerospace related field, and d) faculty sponsorship. + Download Application [PDF | DOC] |

NASA Student Internships The SCSGC will provide support for junior and senior college students to participate in the various research programs: NASA Academy at Goddard or Ames, The Undergraduate Research Program (USRP) run by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Goddard's USRP, Kennedy's USRP, Langley's LARSS, Marshall's USRP or Contracting Internship Program (NCIP), or any independent research project at a NASA Center. These programs enable undergraduate students to work 10 weeks on-site with a mentor. The programs are designed for technically oriented students with an interest in gaining knowledge, awareness and an added appreciation for research activities and its affects in the real world. These internship supplements will be used to support a student's work or to supplement travel expenses to a NASA center. The NASA centers, assisted by the SC Space Grant Consortium, will aid in selecting student participants. Research money awarded by the SC Space Grant Consortium will be administered through the Campus Director on whose campus the Scholar is working. Pre-Service Teacher Scholarship —due Friday
02.13.09 SCSGC Pre-service Teacher's Scholarship Program awards scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each to qualified applicants! SCSGC Pre-service Teacher Scholarship funds may be used for such expenses as: 1) reducing tuition burden; 2) covering travel and registration expenses for attending science and math education workshops or conferences for the purpose of professional development; 3) purchasing supplies for student teaching activities; or 4) other supportive activities that lead to the successful professional development and eventual graduation of the pre-service educator in SC. + Download Application [PDF | DOC] |
