Research

       My current research deals with the processes of social cognition that influence entrepreneurial persistence.  This work grows out of my long-standing interest in attribution processes -- the cognitive processes people use to explain events and behavior.  Most of the present work involves the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED), an extensive longitudinal data set described in detail in Gartner, Shaver, Carter, & Reynolds (2004) The Handbook of Entrepreneurial Dynamics: The Process of Business Creation.  If you are interested in "cleaning" the PSED dataset to reduce it to the 1,216 individuals specified in Row G of Table C5 in the Handbook, you may download the kscleans file from this web site.  You will need SPSS installed on any machine with which you attempt to open the file.  In the tradition of freeware, you may use this file for noncommercial research purposes only.  Please cite the file by its URL, with me as its author.  If after using kscleans, you care to create weights that allow you to (a) reduce the sample to those cases with mail questionnaires, (b) divide the three groups of respondents (fully independent nascent entrepreneurs, partially autonomous nascent entrepreneurs, comparison group members) by sex, and (c) then renormalize the weights to fit the resulting six groups, then you may also download and run the ksrenorm file from this web page.  Again, you may use this file for noncommercial research purposes only; please cite the file by its URL with me as its author.


Course Development

       The College of Charleston is developing an extensive Entrepreneurial Studies program that will involve an Entrepreneurship Concentration in the School of Business and Economics as well as an Innovation Minor involving courses from other Departments and Schools.  The Entrepreneurship Concentration was approved by the Faculty Senate on Tuesday, April 17, 2007.  A brief description  the Entrepreneurship faculty, some of the Entrepreneurship student activities available, and a description of the Concentration can be found at cofcentrepreneurship.com.
