Board of Trustee Minutes

 

 

 

1.

Minutes (1838-1843). The volume covers all aspects of the congregation, including building a new synagogue, new members, hiring a ritual butcher, disciplining members for infractions, mentioning weddings and funerals, recapitulating expenses, etc. With lists of those attending general meetings, details re ritual and observance and the tensions between Reform and Orthodox members.

Minutes (1846-1852). The volume documents the board’s role in all aspects of the congregation; a great portion deals with replacing minister Gustavus Poznanski; maintaining the cemetery; and financial matters. With data on weddings, deaths, a conversion, bar mitzvah, Rev. Julius Eckmann’s resignation, and helping a Russian Jewish family.

Rough Minutes (1857-1866). Preliminary draft of minutes (1857-1862) in the volume details financial problems, members not paying dues or assessments, inability to pay (and keep) ministers, etc. Later minutes (1865-66) document union of KKBE and Shearith Israel Congregations. With lists of members; some letters laid in.

Volume of fair copy of minutes details repair of building, union of KK Beth Elohim and Shearith Israel, hiring and keeping of ministers and ritual butchers, upkeep and use of various cemeteries, etc. With much data on ritual and observance, behavior expected of worshippers, directions to choir and organist. With annual reports, lists of members in arrears, data on amending the constitution (1871), income from the amateur theatricals (1871) and creating the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1873).

Volume records hiring ministers, organist, choir director, etc, selling of seats, changing from seats to pews, use and upkeep of cemeteries, annual meetings, budgets, making changes to services and running a Sunday School; with letters (1877) from minister David Levy, advocating more Reform, including mixed seating and (1881) helping Russian Jews. Mentions of copyright of Penina Moise hymns, her funeral, and attempts to install a memorial in her honor.

Volume details annual, regular and extra meetings; budgets; discussions re the choir; Sunday School; new, overdue and deceased members; use and upkeep of cemeteries; changes in ritual, such as removing hats (1900), etc. With resolutions re allowing those who have married beyond the faith to participate in temple affairs; allowing Barnett Elzas to minister to Beth Elohim, Georgetown, and creating the Perpetual Care Trust fund.
