INTRODUCTION
In
his preface to The Pigeon, Wendell Mitchell Levi (1891-1976) wrote that
“since early boyhood, I have raised pigeons and have found in them a hobby
which has brought relaxation coupled with stimulation to such a degree as to
color and enhance every phase of my life.”
At an early age, Levi was given his first pigeon to comfort him as he
lay ill in bed, thereby beginning a life-long fascination.
A
graduate of College of Charleston (1912) and of the University of Chicago Law
School (1915), Levi was commissioned First Lieutenant in charge of the Pigeon
Section of the United States Army Signal Corps for the South Eastern Department
during World War I. Returning to
civilian life, he continued the practice of law in his native city of Sumter,
South Carolina, and helped to establish the Palmetto Pigeon Plant, said to be
the world’s largest squab farm.
Over
the years, Levi’s involvement with pigeon brought him deeper and deeper into
research concerning the genetics, parasitology, health care, and feeding of
numerous breeds. In contact with fellow
pigeon fanciers throughout the world, he answered hundreds of inquiries, ever
seeking to build a worldwide network of concerned pigeon breeders.
Out of these efforts came a numerous
publications. For nearly fifty years,
Wendell Levi was editor of the “Questions and Answers” department of the American
Pigeon Journal. Pigeon Raising
(1934), a Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Pamphlet, was his first effort at
presenting a more unified look at the raising of pigeons. Realizing the need for a comprehensive
treatment of all aspects of the pigeon, Levi spent years compiling the
information that would be used for The Pigeon (1941), a book which has
undergone numerous revisions and reprinting since its first publication. Levi’s involvement in squab farming led to
the book Making Pigeons Pay (1946), a practical guide for both the
novice and the experienced farmer. The Encyclopedia
of Pigeon Breeds (1965) was a global project, as Levi called upon
colleagues throughout the world to provide him with photographs and data on some
eight hundred different breeds.
Through
a lifetime of devoted effort, Wendell Levi amassed one of the outstanding
libraries in the field, covering not only the pigeon, but ornithology, poultry
science, genetics, and parasitology as well.
In addition to his invaluable collection of books and pamphlets, Mr.
Levi presented to the College of Charleston his personal papers, correspondence
with fellow fanciers and scientists the world over, and manuscripts of all his
writings.
(Levi’s
interest extended to the cold weather camellia as well. And because many fellow pigeon fanciers held
a similar interest, the archives index includes this material.)
The

Where serial holdings are not given, it should be assumed that only
