ADMINISTRATIVE INITIATIVES 2003-2007:

Budget and Fiscal Planning and Management – Collaborated with the President, Provost, other deans, the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance chairs, directors, faculty and staff members to maximally use resources, be fiscally responsible, and move the School forward. Scheduled budget planning initiatives with chairs and directors in the School which became a model for the campus.

Communication - Publish two editions of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance newsletter, Connections, annually. Dean’s Updates provide a positive communication link with faculty and others across campus. The School’s Website was completely revised. Teacher Education celebrated its 75 th birthday at the College of Charleston in 2005 and the School’s history was published as one component of this year of celebration. Our newest publication, “Partners in Education,” May 2007, will be published annually and is the journal associated with our Center for Partnerships to Improve Education.

Curriculum Development and Implementation – Development of an M.A.T. in the Performing Arts is in process, and plans are to accept candidates into the program beginning Fall Semester 2007. Secondary education cognate major has been approved on campus and is on the docket for approval by CHE. Discussions are taking place to develop and offer an M.A.T. in Middle Level in collaboration with The Citadel. Discussions are also in process with Clemson University to bring a doctorate in curriculum and instruction in collaboration with the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance at the College of Charleston to the Lowcountry Graduate Center. Our component of this collaboration will be development of an Ed.S. degree. We are also in the process of completely revising our M.Ed. degree to be more attractive to teachers both in curriculum and delivery.

External Funding – Approximately $10 million dollars received or pledged 2002-07 (an anonymous donation of $1 million, two bequests [one for $3 million and the other for $2 million], $150,000 naming award for courtyard at 86 Wentworth Street, plus the initiation of direct mail and phone campaign that proved quite successful). Received $501,800 from SC Legislature in recurring funds to establish the Center for Partnerships to Improve Education and $400,000 in nonrecurring funds for 06-07 to expand the Center. A grant of $998,000 was received from the US Department of Education for the development of the state’s first English for Speakers of Other Languages ( ESOL) professional development program. Currently in the process of expanding our arts-education partnership to seek additional funding from the Donnally Foundation. Funding for a fully endowed scholarship for Spanish speaking teacher candidates was received from the Goizueta Foundation in the amount of $500,000. Received numerous smaller grants to support faculty and student research and to provide service to the community. One example is a $34,020 grant to provide graduate coursework in gifted and talented education as well as a Teacher Quality Grant ($4.7 million total over five years; our portion is slightly less than $1 million over the five year project) to create diverse pathways to teaching. This grant is in collaboration with USC-Columbia and seven other agencies.

Facilities - We officially opened and dedicated our new home for the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance at the corner of St. Philip and Wentworth Streets on April 20, 2007. We will put our new name on the other major building for our School on campus, the Silcox Center, after the arena is completed. Eight classrooms on the second floor of the Education Center, across the street from the new School of Education building, were renovated and dedicated on October 28, 2005, as the Charles and Andrea Volpe Center for Teaching and Learning.

International Initiatives – Secured funding and established relationships to send a team of faculty members, teacher education candidates, and alumni to teach American culture and conversational English to Chinese teachers of English and students in Chongqing and Dazu, July 2005 and July 2006. Sponsored a College of Charleston – China Connection event on campus during February 2006 and invited Dean Li from Fuling Teachers College as guest and lecturer. Established travel courses to Viet Nam, Chile, and Kenya.

Leadership – School of Education Advisory Board reorganized into a working committee structure, and the Teacher Leadership Alumni Council was formed. Secured a Memorandum of Understanding with the Charleston County School District for 11 and ½ St. Phillip Street to expand programming in early childhood education.

National Accreditation – Successful National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) reaccredidation visit, October 30 – November 3, 2004. All teacher education programs are reaccredited with national recognition. Faculty members have been informed of new SPA reporting format and requirements which specify a minimum of three years of data. Our next NCATE visit is Fall 2011. Successful Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) visit with the reaccredidation of our Athletic Training Education Program during Spring Semester 2005. The Miles Early Childhood Development Center accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

National Connections – Annually attend and present at the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) meeting; represented SC at the 2003 AACTE Leadership Institute in Denver, CO; annually attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting; serve as a member of the AAAS Committee on Opportunities in Science, and as the committee chair since 2005.

Recognitions – Established with School of Business and Economics the Business/Education Award, given annually at the Business/Education Summit, first given Fall 2003.

Technology – After extensive research and discussion, selected Live Text as the electronic portfolio for the Teacher Education Program and designed an electronic portfolio for the Athletic Training Education Program. WebCT designed and made available to interns in clinical practice for better communication. Most School of Education faculty members have participated in the College of Charleston Faculty Technology Institute resulting in our school having the largest percentage of successful completers of this Institute.
