Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get and appointment to see a counselor?

A: Counseling uses a Walk-In Clinic (WIC) to expedite access to services. Except for emergencies, all initial contact with Counseling is through the WIC. Students need only to come to Counseling during the hours listed below and indicate that they would like to talk to a counselor. The WIC hours are: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.

Q: What happens during the initial meeting?

A: Prior to your first meeting with a counselor, you will be asked to complete some paperwork that tells us about you and your concerns. You also will be asked to read some information that describes our services, outlines procedures, and explains confidentiality. You then will meet with a counselor for 30-45 minutes and be able to talk about the concerns that brought you to counseling. The counselor will discuss how counseling can be useful to you and you may have time to discuss alternatives and coping skills and even begin some preliminary problem-solving.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Counseling services are free. There are small fees for assessment for learning/attentional problems and the sanction required alcohol and drug risk management program.

Q: How do I know if my problems are serious enough to warrant counseling?

A: Any situation or concern that creates distress and worry for you to the extent that it interferes with your academic, work, or social functioning, is an appropriate focus for counseling.

Q: Who will know that I came to Counseling?

A: All contacts with Counseling are private and confidential. Except in the rare circumstance where there is imminent danger to yourself or others, any information you volunteer is kept private and secure and maintained separate from other College of Charleston records. Counseling information cannot be released to anyone without your express written consent.

If you have a question that is not addressed here you can call 843-953-5640 during our hours of operation and someone will be glad to answer your questions.
