1977 Distinguished Research Award

The first recipient of the Distinguished Research Award, Dr. Merrill joined the faculty as Assistant Professor of Geology in 1974. Promoted to Associate Professor in 1977, he taught geology, paleontology, petrology and stratigraphy until he left the College in 1982.
During his tenure, Dr. Merrill’s research and publications were primarily about conodont fossils in the Appalachians, northwest Illinois, central Texas and the Aland Archipelago of Finland.
Dr. Merrill received his B.S. degree from Ohio University, his M.A. from the University of Texas, and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University, all in geology. Between his baccalaureate and graduate degrees, he served in the United States Army and continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves after completing his active duty.
Before coming to the College of Charleston, Dr. Merrill was an Instructor at Northwestern State College in 1964, Assistant Professor at Monmouth College 1968-71, and Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington 1971-72.
