Maggie T. Pennington

1985 Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Pennington was the first woman appointed full time to the faculty at the College. She taught biology and advised biology majors for 35 years, from 1962 until her retirement in 1997. She received her promotion to full professor in 1969. She served as Dean of Women 1967-72. She was instrumental in getting the College of Charleston greenhouses built for botanical experiments.
Dr. Pennington received her bachelor’s degree from Radford University and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia.
Before coming to the College of Charleston, Dr. Pennington was Biology Instructor at Hollins College and Professor and Chairman of Biology at Converse College.
She served as Co-Director of the national Science Foundation’s Summer Institute for Improvement of Science Teaching in Middle and High Schools. She is a past president of the South Carolina Academy of Science – only the third College of Charleston faculty member to hold the post.
Dr. Pennington was named a Distinguished Professor of Biology by the College of Charleston in 1978 and received an Honorary Degree upon her retirement in 1997.
