Rose Hamm Rowland

1997 Distinguished Advising Award


Dr. Rowland came to the College of Charleston in 1975 as Instructor of Math. Before she retired in 2001, she had been promoted to Assistant Professor in 1980 and Associate Professor in 1987. During her tenure, she served as Director of the Governor’s School and was Director of the Honors Program for eleven years before returning to full-time teaching in 1999. During those eleven years, the Honors Program sustained tremendous growth in both numbers and admission scores among the students.

Dr. Rowland’s service outside the college included membership in the College Board Academic Assembly where she was active in the Admissions Testing Program and as an Advanced Placement Reader.

Dr. Rowland is an alumna of the College of Charleston, class of 1972. She earned her Masters of Science degree from the University of South Carolina and her Ph.D. from Auburn University.
