Meeting
with Bill Olejniczak
on Nov. 14,
2003
On November 14, the Communication
Across the Curriculum committee met with Bill Olejniczak
from the Academic Planning committee for an hour to discuss the proposal for
the First-Year
Experience Seminar.
After an overview of the proposal,
the committee addressed those areas the CAC program could
support, financially and pedagogically. The First-Year Experience Seminars will
incorporate many
of the activities that CAC programs traditionally support: writing, speaking,
research, electronic
communication, interdisciplinary work.
The CAC committee can envision summer
workshops for the first-year experience faculty as they
prepare new courses for the freshman program and tackle integrating intensive
writing assignments,
intensive speaking assignments, research, and technology into these new courses.
It is perhaps here
that the CAC committee can take the advice of Art Young who told us to "reward
the faculty." A
summer stipend for faculty to attend these workshops while they develop new
courses may be such
as reward.
