University of NC at Greensboro
The Writing
Center director is the coordinator of WAC, with 21 graduate/ undergraduate workers,
open 53 hours per week
Speaking Center
director, open 34 hours per week
Centers located
on different floors same building
Director of
CAC, Walter Beale, has office in same building near Speaking Center
The Following is from Walter
Beale:
Head of Program:
Walter Beale (Prof. of English; former Dean of Arts and Sciences)
Job Description:
We don't have an official job description: basically my job is to coordinate
and publicize activities of the
program, including faculty development, student services, implementation and
oversight of the general
education requirement, outreach to departments, programs.
Reports to: Associate provost for undergraduate
studies.
One or two Directors?
One is enough, but our program
works well because there is a strong and active coordinating committee with
two additional people on release time--a faculty development coordinator for
wac and a faculty development
coordinator for sac, in addition to writing and speaking center directors who
are directly tied into the program.
Source of Funding:
Our funding comes directly
from the provost and it is "dedicated" funding --carved directly out
of a tuition
increase; this is extremely important.
Operating Budget:
About 85k, a substantial portion of which goes into student wages for writing
and speaking centers + a 3/4
time secretary; an additional 50k provides graduate assistantships for the centers.
Advisory Board: No, but I'm not sure we shouldn't
have.
Activities: See job description above.
Faculty Training: The principal activity of
our program--a year-longseries of luncheons, workshops, small-group sessions,
facilitated mostly by local talent--an annual pretty extensive series of summer
workshops, for which faculty are paid to attend.
Where Housed: In the provost's office, although
there are strong connections to and support from the departments of English
and Communication--all the principals have appointments in one of these departments,
with released time to the program
Other faculty development programs? Yes, but we've
found it useful to be on our own, with a distinct identity.
