As globalization of the world's economies continues,  more employee positions can be considered to be international  whether the job is physically located within or outside the United States.  The global orientation of the information highway has only served to hasten this trend.  Now, more than ever, successful business people need to be acutely aware of the global nature of business and must develop skills and competencies that enable them to compete internationally.

The College of Charleston is uniquely positioned to offer a bachelor degree in International Business.  Since its founding in 1670, international trade has been an integral part of the region and Charleston's port has become one of the world's most renown.  International influences can be found throughout this historic city, making it a top destination for international tourists.  The College of Charleston's historic city-center campus places it in the heart of international activity. In fact, our students and faculty work closely with our neighbors at the South Carolina World Trade Center, the S.C. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the SC State Ports Authority, and other key international organizations.

Every full-time School of Business and Economics faculty member holds a Ph.D. or doctorate in a business discipline.  Further, an impressive sixty percent of our faculty members have either lived or worked abroad.  Our  faculty members, consequently,  not only have expertise in their teaching fields but they also bring a impressive wealth of cross-cultural experience to the teaching of business subjects.  In addition, the barrier islands surrounding Charleston are retirement havens for many Fortune 500 executives.  Many of these executives offer their talent and expertise in support of our programs and serve as guest lecturers, part-time instructors, and executives in residence. This "international" expertise is not replicated at many other schools.

The International Business major builds upon the strong Liberal Arts tradition found at the College of Charleston.  In addition to general college requirements, students are required embark upon  a rigorous study of the functional areas of business and supplement this with the study of specialized international business courses.  To gain cross-cultural competencies, students are required to complete an internationally-oriented minor.

Currently, the College of Charleston offers the widest range of foreign languages in the Southeast and its languages division has been awarded a commendation for excellence
-- the only one for languages in South Carolina.  Other interdisciplinary minors such as African Studies, Asian Studies, British Studies, European Studies, Japanese Studies, Latin American/Caribbean Studies, Italian Studies, and Russian Studies as well as Global Logistics and Transportation are further options for International Business students.

The Office of International Education and Programs supports our students in the development of international skills and competencies by developing and maintaining study abroad opportunities.   Our students enjoy study opportunities on every continent.
