Avery Research
Center Governor’s Award
The College of Charleston’s
Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture has been
selected to receive a 2001 Governor’s Award in the Humanities, presented
by the South Carolina Humanities Council. “The Avery Research Center
is recognized as a leader and major contributor to the presentation of
the African American experience in South Carolina,” states the Humanities
Council. “Locally it has sponsored historical exhibits, lectures
and conferences that educate the community about the African American experience
and the history of the Lowcountry. It is a repository for some of
the state’s best African American history collections and is developing
in its archives collections on the state’s civil rights movement.
It is collecting oral histories of the state’s African American legislators.
The Center has developed historical tours of the Lowcountry and is part
of the development of the African American National Heritage Museum, a
multi-site museum in the Lowcountry. The Center is a vital community
resource, whose clientele range from local school children to families,
community groups and civic organizations who visit, tour, and use the facilities.”
Jacob Murray Book Fund
The Jacob Murray fund was
established in honor of a beloved reference librarian at the College.
This year’s recipient is Allison Clyborn. A sophomore majoring in
English (and a double minor in Spanish and Secondary Education) she also
works for two library departments—circulation and administration and is
a member of the College’s cheerleading team.
Annual Charleston Conference
The Charleston Conference
was a huge success this year. Over 600 librarians and vendors attended
from all fifty states and many countries from around the world. |
