Balinsky, Susan E., DrPH, CHES

  • Dr. Balinsky received her Doctor of Public Health degree from the University of South Carolina.
  • She is a Certified Health Education Specialist.
 

Barfield, William, Ph.D.
Professor
Department of Health and Human Performance
  • After obtaining an Associate of Arts at Brevard College, NC, Dr. Barfield earned a Bachelor of Science in 1973, followed by a Master of Science in 1974, both at Western Carolina University. His Doctor of Philosophy in Biomechanics was awarded by Auburn University in 1993.
  • His research interests include analysis of soccer kicking mechanics, human gait, stress fractures, use of cold therapy for treatment of post operative pain, use of bone graft substitutes in an animal model and the effect of rotation of the tibia and femur on preoperative templating.
  • He is in the initial stages of developing a study to assess foot and ankle injuries in motor vehicle accident victims depending on the accident type, where the passenger was seated and whether restrained or not. (1) Comparison of fixation techniques for femoral neck fractures in a sawbones model with dynamic hip screws and unicortical cancellous screws with and without derotation stabilization, (2) Comparison of a vibration power plate with traditional techniques for upper body strength training among 18-35 year old males and females.
 

Barnette, Marie D. "Scooter"

  • Ms. Barnette earned a Bachelor of Science from the College of Charleston in 1978, followed by a Master of Education in Physical Education from the Citadel in 1983.
 

Bartel, Virginia B., Ph.D.

  • Dr. Bartel's background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum, Teaching, and Psychological Studies from the University of Michigan.
 

Blake Jones, Mary E., Ph. D.
Professor
Department of Elementary, Early Childhood, and Middle Level Education
  • Dr. Jones is a scholar in language and literacy training.
  • Dr. Jones received her Bacholor's Degree in Child Study from St Joseph College. Her Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology is from Southern Connecticut State University, and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction is from the University of Connecticut.
  • Her special areas of interest are the impact of dialect on reading achievement and literacy in after-school programs.
  • Her research interests include exploring dialect diversity, strategies that work in after school programs, and storytelling as a teaching tool.
  • Her areas of specialization are language development, integrated language arts, and the use of story.
  • She is currently working with two colleagues on a text about literature for very young children.

Carroll, Tom

  • Tom is returning to the College after graduating in 1991.
  • He has been teaching Physical Education at Woodward Academy in Atlanta for the last 11 years.
  • Tom is married to the former Lynne Snead, a 1990 graduate of the College of Charleston.
 

Clark, Matthew, Ph.D.

  • Dr. Clark, a graduate of Florida State University, will be the first faculty member to work within both the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Elementary, Early Childhood, and Middle Level Education.
  • His background is in math teacher preparation, including ratio and proportion in middle school and geometry education.
 

Cozart, Angela C., Ph.D.

  • Dr. Cozart earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of the State of New York, then finished a Master of Arts, and Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee.
 

Cudahy, Diane, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Department of Foundations, Secondary, and Special Education
  • Dr. Diane Cudahy taught early elementary school and remedial reading in NJ and Michigan after earning her Bachelor of Arts at The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State). In 1987 she received her Master of Science degree in Education with an emphasis on Teacher Leadership from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from UTK in 1996.
 

Davis, Sara C., Ph.D.
Associate Professor; Director of the Center for Faculty Development
Foundations, Secondary and Special Education
  • Dr. Davis received a Bachelor of Science from Erskine College, A Master of Education from the Citadel an a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in Educational Research and Measurement; Specializes in Classroom Assessment.
  • Her research interests lie in technology and assessment.

DelliColli, Judy, Ed.D.

  • Dr. Dellicolli completed her undergraduate work in Early Childhood and Elementary education at the State University of New York at Oswego, an MS in administration at The Citadel and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Carolina.
 

Dudgeon, Wesley, Ph.D.
Visiting Assistant Professor
Department of Health and Human Performance
  • Dr. Dudgeon is originally from Venedocia, OH and has lived in Charleston since 2005.
  • As a health educator, Dr. Dudgeon is interested in studying how excercise of varying modes and intensities influences diseased populations. His current reasearch centers upon the effect that exercise training has on lean tissue mass and hormone and cytokine levels in individuals with HIV.

Edwards, Linda C., Ed.D.
Professor of Education
Department of Elementary, Early Childhood, and Middle Level Education
  • Dr. Edwards began her studies with an A.A. at Brevard College, followed by a Bachelor of Science from Pembroke State University. Later, she was awarded a Master of Education from the University of Massachusetts, and after a Certificate of Graduate Studies from the National Training Laboratories Institute, she went on to earn a Doctor Of Education from the University of Massachusetts.
  • Her research interests are in the fields of early childhood teacher education, education in the visual and performing arts and science in the early childhood classroom. Her areas of specialization are child development, development in the affective domain and creativity through the arts.
  • Her most recently published books are: The Creative Arts: A Process Approach for Teachers and Children, 4ed. Prentice Hall Publishers; and Music: A Way of Life for the Young Child, 5ed. Prentice Hall Publishers. She is currently conducting a national survey (with Dr. Nabors) to gather data on what museums, aquariums, historical sites, libraries and other field trip destinations want children to know before visiting the site.
 

Ellis, Edith B., Ph.D., CHES

  • Dr. Ellis taught in the public schools in Virginia for 32 years prior to beginning her career at the college level.

Finnan, Christine, Ph.D.

  • Dr. Finnan obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley; a Master of Arts from the University of Texas, Austin; and her Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University.
  • Research interests are: school culture change; effectiveness of school reform models in improving student achievement in schools serving low income students; creation of powerful learning environments, especially in upper elementary classrooms; and innovative strategies to reengage struggling students.
 

Fitzharris, Linda H., Ed.D.

  • Dr. Fitzharris' academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from the State University College of New York at Potsdam, a Master of Arts from the State University of New York at Albany, and a Doctor of Education from the University of South Carolina.
 

Fowler, Robert, Ed.D.

  • Dr. Fowler recieved his BA, M.Ed, and Ed.D from the University of Florida.
 

Futrell, Michelle, MA/ATC/SCAT
Senior Instructor; Director of Sports Medicine

  • Ms. Futrell earned her BS in Physical Education and Health with a concentration in Athletic Training from the College of Charleston in 1992. She then completed her MA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994.
  • She is currently employed dually by the departments of Physical Education and Athletics.

Godow, Annette, Psy.D.

  • Dr. Godow was awarded a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1968, and obtained her Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the same institution in 1974.
 

Gurganus, Susan, Ed.D
Professor
Department of Foundations, Secondary and Special Education
  • Dr. Gurganus was a classroom teacher in elementary, middle, and high school settings for ten years and was a consultant in exceptional children with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for four years before moving to Charleston.
  • Dr. Gurganus earned her doctorate at North Carolina State University and has been at the College of Charleston since 1991.
  • Dr. Gurganus specializes in learning disabilities and their impact in academic settings, especially mathematics learning.
  • Her primary focus for the past 30 years--as a teacher, consultant, and professor--has been learning problems and strategies in academic areas, specifically mathematics learning problems.
  • Current research projects include investigations into preservice special education teacher training in mathematics methods and conducting semi-structured diagnostic interviews with students with learning disabilities (PreK to 12)
 

Gutshall, Anne
Visiting Assistant Professor
Department of Foundations, Secondary and Special Education
  • Mrs. Gutshall joins the College as a South Carolina certified school psychologist. She is a former school psychologist and licensed psychoeducational specialist.
  • Her expertise is in school psychology, including emotional and behavior learning disorders in children and adolescents as well as classroom management behavioral interventions.

Hagood, Margaret Carmody, Ph.D.

  • Dr. Hagood received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston, a Master of Arts in Reading and Language Arts from Furman University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Reading Education from the University of Georgia.
  • She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood, elementary, and middle grade literacies, focusing on sociocultural and poststructural theories relevant to new literacies.
  • Her research focuses on childrens' out-of-school literacies, especially those that relate to popular culture.
  • She is a primary researcher for the Center of the Advancement of New Literacies in Middle Grades, studying how middle grades educators and students understand new literacies and utilize out-of-school literacies to improve their literacy performance in teaching and learning in in-school settings.
 

Harris, Rénard B., Ed.D.

  • Dr. Harris received his Ed.D in Teacher Education from the University of Tennessee.
  • His interests are in personal narratives/storytelling and how they relate to core subject content, multicultural education, and African-American culture.
