Dr. Clark came to the College in 1966 as Assistant Professor of History. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1971 and to Professor in 1975. He was awarded the honorary title of Distinguished Professor in 1994. Although he officially retired in 1995, Emeritus Professor Clark continues to teach senior seminars at the College.
Dr. Clark provided leadership and service to the College during his long and distinguished tenure as a member of the faculty. He chaired the Commission to study the Honors Program 1970-71; chaired the Department of History 1972-75; was Director of Institutional Self-Study 1973-75; chaired the Faculty Advisory committee to the President 1978-79; and served as Speaker of the Faculty 1982-83. He was Director of Graduate Studies in History 1990-95 and served as Associate Director of the joint program, with The Citadel, for the Masters of Arts degree in History.
Dr. Clark earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in United States History from The George Washington University and his Ph.D. from Georgetown University.
Dr. Clark taught history and English at La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland, 1959-61.
Dr. Clark was honored with a Special Resolution of Thanks from the South Carolina Historical Society where he had, at various times, served as Chair of the Publications Committee, Chair of the Editorial Board and President.
