Francis H. Courson received her B.S. in Vocational Home Economics from Tift College of Mercer University, her M.A. in Educable Mental Retardation from Western Carolina, her C.A.S. in Special Education from UNC-Charlotte, and her Ph.D. in Special Education/Applied Behavior Analysis from Ohio State University. Before joining the College of Charleston’s Department of Educational Foundations and Specializations, she was an educator of students with behavior and emotional disorders. In 1981 Dr. Courson received the North Carolina Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders Award for Direct Service on Behalf of Behavior Disordered Children. She also won several awards during her time at the College of Charleston, including plaques from the College of Charleston Student Council for Exceptional Children and from the College of Charleston SCEC College Bowl Team. She also received the 1993 Outstanding Teacher Educator Award from Trident Chapter #936 Council for Exceptional Children. In 1995 she was the recipient of the national TED Publication Award for an article she wrote, published in volume 16 of Teacher Education and Special Education. In addition to teaching while at the College, she also served as co-editor of Beyond Behavior. She retired from the College of Charleston in May of 2001.
