Dr. Freeman joined the College of Charleston faculty in 1960 as Professor of Biology and as head of the Biology Department. During more than 29 years of teaching at the College, he advised many students, including hundreds of pre-med students who are now physicians.

Upon his retirement, former students and friends established the Harry W. Freeman ’43 Scholarships in honor of Dr. Freeman and his work. The scholarships are awarded to children of alumni who have expressed a desire to study biology. In 1995, the College awarded Dr. Freeman the Doctor of Humane Letters. In 2005 he received the Founder’s Medal, the highest award presented by the College of Charleston.

Dr. Freeman graduated from the College of Charleston in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He served in the Navy during World War II and received his doctorate from Stanford University in 1951.
