Sylvia Gamboa

2004 Distinguished Service Award


Sylvia Hodges Gamboa joined the Department of English at the College of Charleston as an adjunct faculty member in 1976.  In 1988, she joined the department as an assistant professor.  She holds a B.A. from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and an M.A. from the University of Arkansas.

A tenured member of the Department of English, Sylvia Gamboa has served the College in both faculty and administrative positions.  She directed the Writing Lab, coordinated the Writing Across the Curriculum program, initiated the College’s annual Theme Day interdisciplinary panel discussions, co-founded the SC Writing Center Association conference, and co-founded the National Writing Across the Curriculum conference (now the International Writing Across the Curriculum conference).  As Coordinator of Special Events for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, she also directed three campus-wide, interdisciplinary projects:  “The Vietnam War:  25 Years After,”  “The Jazz Age,” and “The Age of Mozart (1759-1791):  Europe and America during Enlightenment and Revolution.” 

Sylvia Gamboa was the recipient of three grants, one from the Network for Dissemination of Curriculum Infusion and two from the Humanities Council SC. 

Since summer 2000, Sylvia Gamboa led the Maymester / Summer Sessions office, first as director and later as Dean of Summer Programs.
