Professor Gibson joined the Department of Chemistry at the College of Charleston in 1965. He served as department chairman from 1967 until he left the department in 1982 to assume the position of Associate Provost of the College. He presided over the growth of the Department of Chemistry from a faculty of four teaching about 150 students to a faculty of ten full-time professors and two full-time teaching associates.
Dr. Gibson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Wofford College and his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Gibson currently serves as the tenth president of Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee, a post he has held since 1993. He sits on the boards of directors of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, the East Tennessee Foundation and the Knoxville Symphony.
