Samuel M. Hines, Jr. received his A.B. from Davidson College, and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Duke University. He joined the College of Charleston in July of 1973. He has served as the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and was the Founding Dean of the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. In 2004 he was awarded the Lowcountry Executive of the Year Award by the Charleston chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals. He is an Honorary Member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and was also elected to serve a two-year term as President of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. He retired from the College in June of 2007, after thirty-four years of service. He accepted a position as Provost and Dean of the College at The Citadel.
